Just got back from the Baltimore show. Picked up this Commodus sestertius, RIC 1588 ( M. Aurelius) with Libertas standing left. Love the patina on the coin, not so happy with the photos, the color is a little too saturated.
Look nice, I like the colors on it even if its too saturated. Commodus (177 - 192 A.D.) Æ18 of Philippopolis, Thrace O: AV KOMMODOC ANTONINOC laureate head right. Most digital cameras oversaturate by default. Look for a setting that has a term like Faithful or Natural or a way to set saturation in camera to a lower number. A late one
I don't have calipers or a scale that does fractions of grams. But by tape measure it's 24 mm x 28 mm, and the weight is ~19 grams. Anyone have recommendations on a better coin scale and calipers?
That is a hefty coin @beef1020. Since you don't have a scale, how did you weigh it? Just curious as 19 grams seems light for this issue, but perhaps due to exercise and proper diet (read that as wear) it lost some of it's weight.
Or sometimes, I put the coin in one hand, and pick up almonds until they feel the same... 1 almond = 1 gram. Getting them to weigh the same in tenth or hundredth of grams is kinda hard... Just kidding!
The calipers I use are plastic and cost me about $6. I bought them from Air-Tite but just about every coin supply store has them. My scale is a digital pocket scale that came from Amazon for $10 or $20...it's been so long I can't remember. I wanted something that measured to the hundredth of a gram. You can get pretty inexpensive calipers from Amazon also and if I was to buy them all over again, that where I would get them both from.
