    Hi all

Just wanted to ask the pros if this was an error or pmd? I thought it was DD but wasn't quite sure. Also, the dime is extremely shiny or seemed over filled. Thank you.

Overused die. Heavily circulated. It also looks like someone used an acid or chemical that removed a layer of metal from the coin. Probably someone practicing with something like Tarn-X. It may have even had a Dremel put to it. When the field and devices have no contrast, like that dime, that is a good indication of a harsh cleaning.

My name is Dennis I'm here in Portland Oregon and I just ran across in my change drawer a 1985 dime with most of the five gone I'm wondering for what I take this to to show that there is a error in my dime?

    Hello New Member

I'm not a pro, but that looks like double dies to me.
The double dies on the eyes look copper colored in the closeups, but look the right shiny silver color from further away.

The copper coloring could be a natural defect in the photo because dimes are so shiny, they can be hard to photograph.

I damaged some dimes with harsh cleaning when I didn't know what I was doing, and they didn't look anywhere near as nice as your dime looks. It certainly didn't create an illusion of a double die, like your coin strongly appears to have.

Even if your coin did have a layer damaged from harsh cleaning, that doesn't nullify potential double dies in your coin.

If you have a professional coin dealer in your area, see if they'll give an opinion. That's your best bet to understand your coin.

My vote is for double die.
Considering the coming Halloween season, the double dies in the eyes, or whatever that is, at the very least has some novelty value, as it looks very creepy, spooky, and very Halloweenish. .. cheers!!.

Sounds normal but you need to start a new thread and post full sized photos. Welcome to CT.

This thread is from 2016 and the original poster hasn’t been on CT for 5 years. He has a coin that has been harshly cleaned and polished. It was also minted from a worn die. Welcome to CT.
