Another way to create renewed interest in having current holders re-holdered. You know, bottom line inflation.
NGC has recently gotten into the trading card grading game which is a 10 point scale. My guess is this is their attempt to pull some of those clients into the coin market.
I think it also has to do with the Vault Box garbage that is their version of NFTs... kinda. CU has been fun reading since Vault Box has been happening. $400 for a "chance" at a more valuable coin but most likely gonna get something worth half what you paid for the box. Kinda Ponzi Scheme-ish if you ask me.
I personally am not a fan of this in any way. Somehow the ability to increase the bottom line is the only reason this is being done. Tell me in what way this is a benefit to a coin collector. Did any coin collectors ask for this?
It's been a while since I listened but as I recall, that's just what this NGC VP says: The Coin Shop Podcast 019: Executive VP Andrew Salzberg | NGCX https://podcastaddict.com/the-coin-shop-podcast/episode/153838713
I too, like the Hexadecimal idea, where F.F would be the top grade. But if it became adopted, some innovator in Florida would surely then propose replacing it with an EBCDIC based system. Which naturally would be followed by replacement with a Hollerith card-code based system as a "retro throwback" to the 1880s. You know, kind of like the black NGC holders that were reintroduced a few years ago.
I suppose one benefit could be an attempt to bring more people into the hobby. I don't really care for it either...but the 70 point grading scale has always been a bit unique among collectible hobbies. Attempting to create similarity with other hobbies to draw people over might in fact encourage more collectors though. That said, from what I have seen these NGC X coins tend to me modern or lower value coins. These slabs might be excellent opportunities for inexpensive crack-outs for those of us looking to finish off raw modern sets.
Personally, I like the fact the 70 scale is unique because collecting coins is unique. I do realize some will welcome this, and to each their own. If this will cause more people will become collectors in our hobby, it's great. But, somehow coins having to change to be more like comic books and baseball cards does bothers me.
Face it, the TPGs are not in anything for collectors sake , they are in for the money. And collectors are the providers. IMO,
