Just wondering what you think would be the smartest buy: Getting the pcgs pr70dcam first day of issue set with original gov't mint packaging for $289 or getting the two coins directly from the US mint (not graded) for $160? I would rather save the $$$ & get them from the US mint but I have heard of people getting coins that have imperfections and don't know if they would grade pr70dcam if I sent them in myself... Maybe it might just be worth the extra $130 to ensure the pr70dcam grade and first day of issue? I guess I have to take into account the grading fees I would pay as well... But it would be nice to buy the coins now and pay the grading fees later instead of all at once... HMMM..... What do you think is the smartest buy???
This is what I have done. Purchased the 2020 set graded in 70, but I bought them at a good price. I guess the big rush was over, if I would sell now I would actually do quite well. Won't be selling, but nice to know. The 2023 coins purchased in OGP and they look beautiful. Even though I won't be selling, I bought from the mint directly when I saw the raise in mintage, and to me they really aren't the anniversary coins anymore. If i definitely had to have in 70 I would purchase already graded. More money, but guarenteed you're getting exactly what you want on the first try. Doesn't mean I'm right, just my actions and why.
I came back to post this. Can you still purchase from the mint? I was under the impression they sold out, but even if they have sold out I still do what I said above, purchase raw on the open market.
So there is "first strike" "first day of issue" "early release" & "advanced release" I would guess advanced release is the best?
If a '70 is that important to you, then by all means, go for it in the aftermarket. My order for the Peace proof (mint) was pristine. The Morgan was a little less than perfect due to a splotch of die grease on the obverse but I think a bit of acetone could wash away the issue. Otherwise, no complaints. One other thing......due to hype and frenzy that was being conducted during the initial roll out of these coins (and the mint trying to get these out to everyone in a timely fashion), I believe you stand a better chance at getting one in excellent condition now that all the 'hoo-ra' has died down and quality control (mint) is back in force, MHO
When you say "best" I guess you mean most costly? Personally, I try to purposely avoid all those pedigrees.
My vote is neither. I don't see these pieces as "investments." The mintages are going to be fairly high, and probably some collectors are like me. I'm buying one of each for type. If they become a set, I won't be going any further. I have zero interest in certified pieces, so I am not prepared to comment on that.
I broke down and just bought a proof Peace from the mint. They're still available but will sell out eventually. Sooner rather than later as I believe what's left is getting thin. Also got an American Liberty medal because the design is so cool with the tree. I love the gold too but a grand over melt is too rich for me. I just don't want one that bad. I'd like a Morgan proof but seeing as I'm getting the RP set, I decided to limit my purchases there and didn't get the Morgan. The prices are steep. Maybe will get one down the road. The 2021s were more imporant than this year to me.
Just got my set from the mint yesterday. The peace dollar is nice and nearly flawless. The morgan on the other hand is a disappointment. It had three very noticeable nicks on the obverse. One in the fields and 2 on the devices. It is a beautiful coin but for the price....
