I picked up this monster Byzantine recently:

    justinian.jpg
    Justinian I, 527-565. Follis (Bronze, 43mm, 22.29 g 6), Nicomedia, RY 12 = 538/9. D N IVSTINIANVS P P AVC Diademed, helmeted and cuirassed bust of Justinian facing, holding globus cruciger and shield; in field to right, cross. Rev. A / N / N / N / O - XII / NIKO Large M; above, cross; below, A.

While a lot of the Byzantine coins are in quite poor style, this portrait really appealed to me so i had to have it. At 43mm, this is pretty enormous. Not that your size should matter, but how big do they come? Post your big Byzantines!

The folles of Nicomedia I believe are the largest of the Justinian coins ranging from around 41 to 45mm, and are certainly the largest issue I have ever seen from the Byzantine period. The two I have are 42 and 44mm (just measured them). For some insane reason I prefer the much smaller one to four nummi issues which are actually much tougher to find.

That's lot of bronze. They must have had quite a bit of buying power back in the day.

I agree @Greg Heinrich that the portrait is excellent for a Byzantine coin. Nice find.

43 is a pretty large one. The largest come from year 12 or 13 generally. After that the plaque hit and they started to shrink again. I think my largest is around 44ish.

I JUST got this in the mail as a freebie that a dealer gave me as a thank you! I was VERY surprised! SO surprised, I missed the coin I had bought, accidentaly through it out with the packing material, and contacted him that perhaps he made a boo-boo and sent me this coin. He explained that it was a gift, and that it was packed with my tiny coin I ordered. I frantically went through my trash and FOUND it. LOL, I felt like an idiot... always nice to have humbling experiences to keep your feet firmly on the ground. :)

I THINK that this is a Justinian I... However, would anyone be able to help me confirm if I am right? I do not focus in this area and have very limited knowledge on this. (THANKS!)

Not sure what the record diameter is, but 40mm +/- is the average for the issue. I bid on some at CNG which just closed, but was outbid on all.
