First thanks for allowing me to join. I absolutely love coin hunting and finding all kinds of coins in everyday change people give me at my job Here's my question it's been bugging me for a while. Why is it on the back of the state issued US quarters the front of the coin it spells uNITED STATES OF AMERICA??? the older ones on the reverse are spelled correctly as in UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. It's the letter u that should be a capital letter always in UNITED STATES. If anyone knows the reason for this please help . Thank you in advance. Brittany
That's... actually a really interesting question! It's still an uppercase U (it's the same size as the other letters), but the typeface has an unusual style for the U. Wikipedia says it's based on a typeface called "Albertus", and I agree: By tarrytown - Albertus 481 100_1936, CC BY 2.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=50505083 At least it doesn't look like a capital V, the way it does on Peace dollars and Standing Liberty quarters! Welcome to CoinTalk!
Huh, I never noticed that before but had to check. That's the way the coin was designed but does seem odd.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albertus_(typeface) In the uppercase "M" the middle strokes descend only partway, not reaching the baseline, in the default version. The uppercase "U" has a stem on the right side. Figures are lining.
That's right. UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS is set in a different (sans-serif) typeface. Eleanor Roosevelt is set in yet a third. It's not a design choice I would've made.
Is it just quarters. If not then what the hell. I kinda find that disturbing. I looked at other coins and their different
