Found this 1909-S but after looking at it more closely it's possibly VDB on the rim? I have terrible eyes and just the camera on my phone. What do you think?
It's definitely there on the bottom rim but on the seam and gapped in the middle of the letters. Just don't know if it's legit....
With the strike on that coin being pretty good, the vdb should also be pretty visible. I have provided a link for you to look at. Carefully follow the NGCcoin photos of the only known 4 positions of the S mintmark. Pay attention to the small raised dot in the upper curve of the S. https://www.ngccoin.in/resources/counterfeit-detection/top/united-states/1/
I was all set to say "there's no such thing as a 'weak VDB'", but PCGS makes a liar out of me: https://www.pcgs.com/auctionprices/item/1909-s-vdb-1c-bn/2428/-4035033996529851777 On a coin in this condition, with images this clear, I'd still expect to see the VDB more clearly -- but now my own pareidolia is making it hard to be sure. You'll need to compare to known images, as @expat said. If the position and spacing of V D B are any different from the reference images, it's not real. Great images, and welcome to CoinTalk!
I think it's in position to be mint mark #3. It's just that VDB at on that cut rim I'm confused about....
I've highlighted what I'm looking at, but once you see it you kind of see it. It's not where you would expect it to be.
Yeah, it would never be down there. I was seeing what looked like a pretty clear but faint "B" above the highlight, but then a "V" to the right of that -- so, yeah, pareidolia. At least for me.
I guess I must be nuts, I even see the 3 periods/ dots on the outer most edge. It's finned pretty good on the back side and figured it's definitely not normal and definitely an error. It's just me Lol!
That is the wrong reverse for the 1909 SVDB. All SVDB’s have the shallow N in UNITED. This coin has the deep N. Shallow Deep
I like photo 4 the best. Crazy question. Does the mint mark position add extra value. I wish everyone had one
