Finally went through my collection of 70 or so 1941-S nickels tonight and was pleasantly surprised to find that 7 of them are the Large S variety including one with a nice lamination error.. 41S-LargeS.jpg

Thank you... have had several of those coins for close to 30 years. Two of them have come from my CRH activities of the past 4 1/2 months.. funny, I actually printed that picture out from the reference (the one with the gridlines) before I went through them so it would be easier for me. My local coin dealer friend had been telling me to go through them for a while, so he will be happy to hear of my findings.

Interesting! Your thread plus @Lehigh96 's prompted me to look again at my Jefferson book. I only have one 41-S. I 'think' it's a large mint mark! Are you says that the large variety mint mark a fairly scares? Mine is definitely not a FS.

Best thing to do is take a picture of it and/or compare it to the photos... On the "Small S" variety, the mint-mark looks squished like the ones on the 40-S's.

If only 1 in 10 of the 41-S's is the Large S (as my numbers suggest), that would mean a little more than 4 million were made, putting them right in there with the 38 and 39 mintmarked varieties in terms of scarcity.

I just took a picture of it. Can I get your opinion?

That's a "Small S"... the serifs on the ends are flat instead of pointed... still, that's a nice coin!

Hmmm, really? I see what you're saying. Okay, thanks. On that other thread it says:

Observations of this mintmark are that it is slightly larger and more symmetrical in its width. Furthermore, the bottom edge of the mintmark is noticeably located below the bottom edge of the window on Monticello. Another important difference between the two styles of mintmark is that the Large "S" has a triangular shaped bottom serif that is very distinctive and varies significantly from the knob shape of the smaller mintmark.

The bottom of my S looks like it's below that window.

If you have a 1940-S nickel, and compare it, the S on your coin should look fairly similar to that one.

    Okay, here's the 41 S again and the 40 S under it.

From your example and explanation, I'm thinking that this 41 S is a large mint mark. What do you think?

Had 3 birthday celebrations in 4 days and then have spent the past couple of days trying to fix a screw up by one of my credit card companies (they double posted a payment)... I haven't been online much as a result.

Hey, no problem. Hope you got things squared away.

Just a little surprised. After 157 views on this thread only 18 (you and I) have replied to it. Maybe folks are on vacation. :)
