I'm very keen to go to my first coin show - either in the states or in Europe. As some of you know, I travel a lot, and i would love to include a coin show in a future itinerary and maybe meet some of you guys in real life. So which shows are good and when are they?
I can't talk for the US, but I've been to Paris coin show in march and it's quite nice a fair But most probably München and/or Berlin (don't know when they take place) are better though Q
New York International Numismatic Convention, held in January each year at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City is great fun for maximum exposure to ancients dealers and collectors.
If you ever make it to north Texas the annual Texas Numismatic Association coin show is great! The cow town, and grapevine ones are good as well!
If your interest lies primarily in ancients, and it appears it does, few shows in the US are likely candidates for in most cases you might only find 1 or 2 dealers in ancients, with the NY show already mentioned being an exception. That one is a biggie !
FUN Show in Florida this summer had at least 9 solid Ancients tables. This is usually the "smaller" of their 2 Shows. They are holding the FUN Show in Jan-2017 in Ft. Laudedale, and it will NOT conflict with the NYINC Jan-2017 Show. I plan to visit FUN as I am anticipating a lot more Ancients tables, and it is a perfect time of the year for this venue. My thoughts.
+1 for NYINC. It's fabulous. It's certainly a long way from down under, but if you've never been to Manhattan that must be on your walkabout list. The show is the 2nd week of January next year. Go. http://nyinc.info
Only show I've been to is the NYINC in January, it is a really nice show with lots of ancients. You won't find much if any modern coins there. I've heard good things about the FUN show in Florida too, but that seems to be a regular coin show with ancients mixed in.
I go to the Baltimore show three times a year as it's less than an hour away. It has a decent ancients section, but it is by far US coin focused. If your in the Baltimore area when they are having a show it definitely worth checking out, but I would not make a trip just to go. The NYINC show would be a better choice.
Ft. Lauderdale is only 20-25 minutes from where I live so I will definitely try to make it in January.
I also live 20 minutes from Fort Lauderdale. Maybe we can meet up at the show. It would be fun to hang out with someone from the ancient forum.
If you have a choice between Europe and US shows for ancients, go to European ones. Much larger. There is a huge one in Germany every year. Maybe our European friends can help with the names there. For the US, the biggest by far is the NY show. Weird layout, though, with the bourse all broken up into different areas. Second choice may be CICF, but with Harlan starting his own show maybe plan on going to Chicago in April but going to two different shows. For some reason they will be on the same dates.
NYINC is the biggest and baddest in the US. Chris is right that the layout is odd, but it's not really a big deal. The show is set up on a hotel floor (Waldorf Astoria), rather than a convention center. So you're walking through hallways to get to various rooms in which dealers are set up. The joke is you might open the wrong door and walk into an orgy. "Damn, that's not what I wanted. Where are the coins?"
