Cheerios Cent variety?

I recently sent off a Cheerios Cent (it was in the little black packaging) off to PCGS and lid the extra $18 for variety attribution specifically stating I wanted it labeled as a Cheerios cent.

It came back without a signifier and when I called customer service all they told me was that it would only be certified as a Cheerios cent if the grader determined it was one. What gives?

Never heard of that one. There were two varieties of dollars in the sealed packages - both "Cheerios" prizes but only one had a different design and was valuable. I know of no such diagnostic difference between the cents and Have tried to find one. Perhaps if one were to look through 50-60 "Cheerios" cents, there might be a die or design stage that PCGS has determined is different from the regular cents of that date. Call NGC and ask if they slab all the cents in "Cheerio" packaging as that variety. This will do you no good as the idiots (for now if there is no special cent var.) at PCGS took your coin out of the package!

Let us know what you find out. NGC# 941-360-3990

I have some cents and dollars somewhere in the original packaging that I got back in the day with Cherrios.
Haven't looked for them, I'll come across them sooner or later.

I think the OP just wanted the slab to signify it was a Cheerios specific cent like the example in the above link.

Thanks, but this does not answer my question or the OP's. Why didn't PCGS slab the coin as a "Cheerios" cent?

The PCGS grader doesn't eat Cheerios so they have no idea what you are talking about.

I remember buying a box of Cheerios just for the cent and pitching the cereal into the dustbin.

I actually have a small stack of Sacagawega dollars from the Cheerio box. Unfortunately non of them have the detailed tail feathers. One seems to be between detailed and undetailed though.

I think you got screwed by the same folks that screwed this one up:

In short, lack of "Quality Assurance" separated the "Cheerios" request from the submission since there is absolutely no difference between a Cheerios Lincoln and the standard 2009 Lincoln Cent. It's all about the packaging. (Kinda like First Strike™)

I'll bet they kept your fee's as well.

Thats the trouble with these. Everybody that has a 2000 P Sacagawea believes that its a "Cheerios" Sacagawea.

Just like everybody that finds a 1970 No S Dime believes that its "THE" 1970 No S Dime and worth a fortune.

There should not have been a problem with them showing it on the holder. I would call them again. You paid for it. Here is one on ebay.

A grader cannot determine that! If you sent it in the original packaging, than the people UPFRONT would have to identify it when they opened your package. The coin would look just like any other business strike without the packaging.

Because they have done it before (see here), it shouldn't have been a problem unless they changed their policy to no longer accept the Cheerios packaging as evidence in order to eliminate the possibility of folks counterfeiting the packaging. I would be in favor of that policy change. As for the Cheerios dollar, the different die serves as verification.

We know you did. The other poster has proposed that it was removed and not kept with the coin BEFORE the grader saw it.

Call PCGS customer service, tell them the coin became separated SOMEHOW from the package and hope they can rectify it for you. Judge the best time (if needed) to let them know that you are not happy and their mistake and indifference to customer service will prompt letters to NN and CW, plus ANA and the Collectors Universe coin form. Be nice.
