This is going to sound stupid but why do coins have dates anyways?

Besides making some coins more valuable than others, there doesn't seem to be a pressing need for dates on coins.
The mint could just as easily make dateless coins. This would save a bit of time and money as they would not have to change the die for the next year.
But I guess it wouldn't be as fun for collectors.

Coins have dates so they won't feel lonely.

Why do some coins have square holes instead of round holes? Or vice/versa.

If we only exist in some great cosmic dream, will our coins disappear when the Great Dreamer wakes up?

It has to do with psychological testing. If a patient tries to fit a square hole coin into a round hole coin spot, then something's not right. If the patient puts the coin in its matching hole then everything is just peachy keen.

No my coins, which number in the thousands, are always there when I wake up. Sales are slow. I've learned how to use a digital camera and now that's helped some. Now here's a thought to ponder. The French philosopher, Herbert Marcuse said: "Life is the unpleasant interruption of peaceful non-existence." I wonder if he had a coin collection or even some francs or centimes around his place when he died. Were they still around after he went back to peaceful non-existence?

    Why dates?

    Because they don't have figs.

That would explain waffled coins. They're really a Rorschach ink blot test?
