Not sure of their age but I think it’s neat, an unopened roll of 40 of them. It’s something you just don’t see that often. Value is $7.00.

I have a vague memory of these turnpike tokens, and remember buying a roll of them at some point. Still the design shown in the photos did not stimulate my memory. At one time these roads had toll booths in the middle of the highway. You had to stop every few miles and “spit” quarters. If you bought these tokens, you got a little discount. It made sense if you traveled the road regularly. I used them when I drove from Massachusetts to Delaware to see my parents. The trouble with this system was that it caused more than a few rear end collisions. People just drove mindlessly and didn’t make the stops in time. They could also cause backups if the traffic was heavy.
I remember those toll booths also. Traveling through CT. , I also remember the booths backed up during peak times (Vacationers, rush hour etc.). The problem with the tolls was that at some point there were many lanes making merging very tricky. Some lanes are for cars only and what was called quick pass.
Today’s toll booths are still a problem. A few years ago I went through one either in Pennsylvania Maryland or Virginia I can’t remember which, and you didn’t even have to slow down he went through at 70 miles an hour or less if it was located on exit or entrance. The thing was it took a photo of you driving your car with your license plate and they mailed you a bill for a couple bucks.
