Here is my 1858 flying eagle . I am hoping to get a close estimate on the grade , and also if anyone can enlighten me on whether it is large or small letter variety. Thanks in advance. Any help is greatly appreciated.also very sorry for the sideways pictures I know its a pain.
I'd rate it VG, too worn to be Fine and way off VF. May look more like fine in hand but the pictures do not do it any favours
Lets say it was VF 30 ... For this coin , would that be a middle of the road condition , or on the lower side for these coins? Also would you guys mind helping me on a grade for one of my buffalo nickels? I'm more of a cwt collector and haven't messed around with my U.S coins in a while, kinda rusty
camera phone really doesn't do it justice but hopefully shows enough for a estimate on a grade for it
We play "Let's Say" but you will not learn anything from the exercise. First, your coin is a Small Letter variety because the "AM" in America are separated. If you feel comfortable with your CWT grading skills, this one should be easy. Do you own a grading guide? Now as to its grade. I suggest you go to the PCGS website and compare the photos of the F-15 and the VF-20. IMO your coin is a solid F-15; however as I wrote above, most dealers will sell it as a VF. The low end of VF...that's VF-20! IMO, no professional TPGS grader would grade this coin higher than a VF-20 and then he might be taken to the wood shed anyway. From what I see at shows, your coin is in the middle range for unslabbed specimens.
Ok thanks for the information. I know that certain types of coins are graded differently depending on wear at certain spots. Not too familiar with the aspects on the grading of these. I am pretty good on the cwt's though.. They do not have the same grading techniques /guidelines. So I'm very thankful for all the help . I trust this forum , lots of help on here
