    I have been looking for am 1881-S for sometime and came across this example, can you guess the grade ? for a bonus can you tell me what historically happened that year?
    first correct answer will get something from my MPC grab bag, good luck :)

    Nice coin, gold gets banged up easy. I'd guess MS62, made the same year Garfield was assasinated.

    @ToughCOINS
    I was thinking that till I noticed the holder, that's why I went with 62.
    But hey I've been wrong before:confused:

    MS62? both president Garfield and Billy the Kid were shot and killed that year.

    I was thinking AU-55 to 58. Not very good at grading gold but what looks like wear in the hair and in several locations on the reverse has me at an AU grade.

    I would say AU-55. I have a few pieces that are graded AU-58 which are nicer.

    Technically you only get one answer event though 55-58 was mentioned in a previous post, I will give both pub and John an equal chance as the coin is an A/U 55

    tie breaker, which was part of the bonus earlier, the first one that can tell me
    the historical event that took place in 1881 wins all the marbles good luck :)
