Greetings, Everyone. I was advised to post here in regard to a mystery coin that needs to be unraveled by SME sleuths. It seems to me that this coin may of Roman origin. What are your thoughts? Thanks, CoinMagic
Definitely some sort of modern fantasy, very loosely based on Roman coins. The legend on the reverse is imitating a common form of Roman reverse legend that listed abbreviations of the Emperor's titles and powers, but this one has been made by someone who didn't understand what the letters actually stood for. Instead of TR P (Tribunitia Potestas) this piece reads TP P. It also reads COS I. This would indicate the number of times the emperor had renewed his consular power, except that the first time was not shown as I, it was just COS, and numbering only started with II. I assume the last letters are supposed to be PP (Pater Patriae), but that first P is distorted into some very non-Roman letter. I could go on, but I'm hungry and dinner is getting cold. TLDR: A modern fantasy piece, pseudo-Roman. P.S. Welcome to Coin Talk! Sorry I couldn't tell you you'd found a rare and valuable ancient coin, but maybe this will inspire you to obtain a genuine ancient? (Some types are surprisingly affordable, and lots of people here would be willing to help you find and choose one to purchase.)
