Possibly in the $30k range, but who knows. It will be interesting to see the final price. Too bad it’s such an undesirable coin…
Here are some screenshots of the holder and the first couple paragraphs of the article for those that don’t want to click the link:
The coin has nothing to do with it. Numismatic history does. But, the important aspect is this is a 100% donation to WU, a very very respected YN Program, with the support of the Whos Who of the Numismatic Community-TPGs, 4PGs, 5PGs Dealers, notable Collectors, Researchers, Auction business entities, etc. The generosity of individuals within that community will be on the Stage. And, it is a probable tax deductible situation/opportunity. I would not be surprised if the # exceeds 50 K. WU is teaching YNs, of which many will be future well know contributors to the Hobby. Truth in editing: removed the # "4".
I realize that. I was just pointing out that someone is going to pay a lot of money for a historic piece of plastic with worthless coin inside.
Putting unique items like this up for auction its anybody's guess, but being for charity that will definitely up the price !
The first US dollar sold for $12 million, so in today's slab-happy world this should go for about the same. Too bad it didn't get the CAC sticker.
Over in China, they see an easily duped label/plastic and could just use imported 1982 quarters. Maybe we should go to the banks and get boxes of quarters before they do.
The conclusion: 46K with the vig. Not to shabby and a great boost for the Witter YN University cause, and the Hobby.
