Please guess the grade of the 1941-D Jefferson Nickel shown below. I have attached a poll for you to cast your vote and you may select up to 3 different things: the numerical grade, 5FS or 6FS or Not FS, and + grade. Please don't forget to vote in the poll about how you think NGC graded the coin, and as always, comments welcome.
Another outstanding nickel. Late die state, it's a shiner. Carbon spots do bother my eyes. How NGC treats them from a market grading standpoint, I don't know their market like they do. I'm giving it a market MS65 for the spots, which I think is one under its technical grade. And 6FS, I forgot to check it when I voted.
MS 66 6FS ....very clean surfaces with minimal marks ...the steps are a bit questionable under the 2nd column but I think overall there is enough separation to squeak out the 6 full steps ....the spots are distracting and that would be enough for me to prevent a 67 grade
I believe that if its straight graded it would be a MS64 6FS. Probably really a MS67 6FS Details corrosion.
I'm at MS66 6FS with this one. There is a tiny merging of the steps under the second column when the photo is blown up...but I think it's so minimal that it still gets the 6FS. Coin is really sharp with almost no hits. Minor carbon spotting is the only drawback here. It might get a "+" but I think MS66 6FS.
Ok. I want to change my guess cuz I see that the dots aren’t graded more harshly. I say 65 minus the spots
66 6FS. Totally hammered strike. The carbon spots prevent it from being a 67, but otherwise, a very attractive nickel. The toning is very desirable, so it could sneak under the wire to be a 67, but I will stick to MS66 6 full steps.
This is another of my tricks. I bought this coin last November for $75 in an old fatty holder with the intention of sending it to NGC for regrade to get full steps. It is at NGC and should be finished any day now. Does anyone wanna change their grade, or are you standing pat?
Do you think the spots were there when the coin was originally slabbed or could they have developed afterwards? On the full slab shot they are a little less noticeable but one can still see them. I'm surprised NGC wasn't more conservative with the coin in the fatty era. Regardless of my opinion of 66 6FS, I think you have a chance at getting the 67 6FS based on it already being a 67 and the steps being 95% there (meaning I believe most would give it the designation).
