My wife collects gemstones, which I find mildly fascinating. If I see one I like I'll buy it, but its based on looks rather than worth. I try to get her into coins any coins but no interest. But she has no interest in history while I'm always studying up on history. I guess over the years I've realized we have nothing in common.
I know my dad collects mint coinage but other than that I'm in a world of my own when it comes to collecting coins.

Thanks for the link. My father's primary language is Spanish so I would be able to help translate the more difficult terms (he can read English but he is not 100% proficient), but getting him to actually bother looking at it is another story.

What I find most interesting is that so many so called non-collectors, really do envy us that are able to build up beautifull collections. I sometimes send photos to my lawn clients of my coins via e-mail, all were amazed and some even started into the hobby. I heard it once said that "collecting coins" was the hobby of kings/industrialists/bigshots...not exactly true, since ordinary guys like myself are also avid collectors and really love it.....even though $ is always in short supply.

Hmm, I've been married for 48+ years. I realized soon after we married we had nothing in common. She is smart, good looking and talented.

Been around 25 or so years. But I'm pretty sure I'm the smart & good looking one, lol.

Yeah, well, with that attitude I wouldn't be looking forward to the next 25. :woot:

Faced with the option the wife or the coins, which would you choose?

Carausius Brother, can you spare a sestertius?

My teenage son only wants to know what each new coin is worth. My tween daughter wants me to leave her my nicely rebound auction catalogues as decorative accessories for her future living room. o_O

My mother has a few gemstones which got me mildly interested in them. Don't have any myself but I don't mind adding a couple for the looks.

There is a little history to like on certain stones but it's more of a geological thing. I can't tell you what it takes or how many years it takes a gemstone to create. But I can sure at least make it look like I care when she's explaining it to me.

I have several gemstones that I have collected, but nothing really to write home about. I set them aside, so I really do not remember what all I have... I reckon the Grandkids will have to sort them out...

I was going to ask about your Woodworking tools (The Delta in your pic), but @TIF asked first. I was in wood manufacturing for a few years and had a lot of fun with that. Although we did have one of our sawdust reclamation bins hugely exploded and damaged the office building I was in!

My wife enjoys my collecting, as she collects other "things". But my MOTHER was constantly asking "how do I KNOW it is not a FAKE???" Mothers can really hit at the heart of you!

There's likely more money tied up in them stones than I have in coins. Oh but the look I get when I say this coin cost me $400 or more. I handed her an 8 ct red ruby last week she never asked how much it cost.

LOL, well 6 daughters remind me of ALL my mistakes... it is easier for me to just "learn"...

Wow, I don't think I'd survived. 2 sons 1st wife, no kids with 2nd. So maybe I did learn something.

The girls I know have a much greater appreciation for my musical passion and my ecclectic taste in musical instruments. But, alas, I am still single. So the search continues...

I have a couple friends at Georgia Tech that are genuinely interested in my Ancient Chinese (particularly the not-round ones ;) ), especially since they though coin collecting was just filling up an album with 200 Lincoln cents.
