Beautiful color; wow! I think it looks MS65. There appear to be some contact marks, but I'm pretty sure that's the toning and not significant contact with the coin itself. I don't believe it's FBL; the bottom, left lines are bit weak and with definite contact. Overall; lovely coin I think.
I'm not a fan of toned coins, although I got some from my Father. I think I'll stay out of this one. Other than the toning, it looks like a nice coin. Thanks for sharing.
MS 64...not FBL as the the lines are interrupted on the bottom...nice color, which I think helps to cover some hits (that bring the grade down to the 64)
Ok, reveal. The pro pics actually make the coin look lower grade than the coin in hand. There are a couple of very small hits on the forehead, but a lot of it is that the toning exaggerated the size of the bag marks a bit. The color is very nice, and should fit with the rest of my toned Franklin collection. PCGS went 65, with no FBL, which is pretty obvious. I think it is a 64+, with color bump to 65 making it appropriately graded, IMHO. Here are two fast and crappy iPhone pics that I took:
Darn, missed it by one grade. The toning is nice and I like it but it probably fooled me on the grade.
This is where I am at, and I'll admit I am by no means a professional for such things. Usually on these GTG posts, I come within 1 or 2 and go about my day. I don't feel the need to beat a dead horse on why a coin grades as it does, and in part, I don't feel professional enough to warrant an opinion. On this one, I was way off. Based on the original photo, I had such a hard time seeing the luster through the toning. Being as such, I was guessing AU or low MS. I didn't see the typical wear patterns on any of the devices, making me initially think MS, but still, I did not see what I would recognize as luster. Now the second photos, seemed much better for showing that grading detail than the first. I guess what I want to know and discuss, and this may not be the thread for it, when the toning is rather heavy, how do you see the trees among the forest for looking at luster and device details? Just practice? This for one, is why I usually go for the "white" version if I am buying uncirculated for the set.
