Taking A Craigslist Chance

OK...here we go 1/10 oz 2018 American Liberty gold proof coin offered on Craigslist for $275...sent an e-mail offering $250 and am supposed to meet in a Chase Bank lobby tomorrow. Has OGP and I will inspect it and weigh it, except I don't know what it should weigh in the government packaged lens...any info appreciated, all I know is that it shouldn't be magnetic and should weigh more than 3.110 g (including the lens). Wish me luck or warn me...

Clearly not alright. It's something @Kentucky seems to have not considered.
I would say stolen is worse than fake. Fake, 1 person loses. Stolen, at least 2 people.

It might be sketchy, but it's NOT like it's priced under spot.
Remove from the capsule and weigh it.

If legit, offer $225. like you should have in the first place

 

$225 sounds just a bit better than $250! I think he's desperate and will sell for the lower amount.

 

Considering you can get a tenth ounce on eBay for $250ish and not even leave the house.
I'd say if driving across the town to meetup, that's worth a $25 discount.
Maybe I'm cheap (we're not arguing that point )

Should get the sellers contact information and ask if they have or may have something else in the future... doesn't cost anything to ask.

How much money are you saving by doing this “cloak and dagger” stuff? I stick to the usual buying and selling channels and don’t have to worry about other issues.

 

Not under spot, but these do seem to sell for more than $250. But it's not too far off, you're right.

Just because it’s a CL listing doesn’t mean it’s stolen or fake. I sell an occasional piece on CL and find great local connections. Even repeat buyers.

 

I've never had any good luck using craigs list. Not sure why. Maybe because anyone can set up an account on it without having to use credentials. I tried to sell a few items on there (automobile parts and audio equipment) and I got nothing but flakes that I had to deal with. I learned from that experience never drive more then a few miles from home to meet the person. If you drive far, they will low ball you hard, playing the odds that you'll take about any low price to try and at least recoup for your time and vehicle fuel. I know your case is different since you're the buyer. But that's my experience with CL.

Doing it today at 3:00. I've done two other deals with coins on Cragslist, one was for a gold 1/4 oz Standing Liberty "tribute" coin from the mint which seems to be genuine, the guy just needed the money, and a Peace dollar which WAS a kind of sketchy deal which I probably shouldn't have done... Does anyone know what this coin should weigh in the protective capsule? I'm just looking for it to be more than 3.11 g and not be magnetl... OK @paddyman98 ferromagnetic.

 

3.393g for the coin itself. It contains 1/10 troy oz of gold, but it's only 22k.

I'll see if I still have a capsule for one upstairs, but I doubt it. The guy might let you open the capsule then do a tared weigh (open the capsule, tare the empty half, transfer the coin to that half, weigh the coin, seal it back up).

 

Actually the American Liberty is a 99.99% gold proof coin, so 3.11 g

 

Oh, derp, I thought we were just talking about a standard AGE proof. I'm guessing any weight info on an AGE capsule wouldn't be useful, then, and I don't have any of the Liberty coins, with or without capsules.

 

Yeah, I saw this one and figured it was a good deal. I have an unc. 1/10 AGE, but no capsule. The weight of any capsule fitting one of these would be helpful.

 

I looked deep and thought I had one to weigh up...
It turned out to be a 1/4 ounce.
I had one in a random plastic airtite with black insert and it weighed up almost 6 grams.
