What do you think the grade is on this 1898-S $10 liberty head gold coin graded by NGC? IMG_20230625_133001.jpg IMG_20230625_132957.jpg IMG_20230625_132942.jpg IMG_20230625_132939.jpg IMG_20230625_133001.jpg IMG_20230625_132957.jpg IMG_20230625_132942.jpg IMG_20230625_132939.jpg

Luster is great but there are so many marks on the face. I’m thinking XF-45 but could be a rough MS-60

    I'm right with @dddd at MS62.

Gold tends to show more marks than silver and I have made the mistake of being too harsh in grading it before. I guess we will see what happens with the reveal.

In that case, I'll go with MS-61

'62 came to my mind and I see some eminent fellows tend to agree with my assessment. :)

Time for the reveal.... The grade is MS60. I bought this coin in person at a local coin shop. I was really on the hunt for a 10 LIB with a higher grade. (a 62 or 63) Despite the chatter in the fields, I still really liked that it is semi-proof like and has very strong luster. Even though the fields have a lot of contact marks the eye appeal is still very nice IMO. I figured if I ever find one in a higher grade I will enjoy better I can always replace it! 20230625_200231.jpg

It does have plenty of chatter but the MS 60 grade is seldom used, so I'm a bit surprised. It seems like you got a nice coin (I like the semi-pl look as well) and you don't have to worry about it being overgraded!

Deserves better than a '60 designation (mho).......

Yeah you dont see the grade of MS60 given out very often these days... Both NGC and PCGS combined have only graded 71 of these at MS60. NGC's population is 40 and PCGS' is 31. Why couldn't they have just bumped it up to 61? :)
