I just noticed that the E and D of UNITED looks clipped at the bottom of the letters. No other letters seems to be affected.
Split Plating Doubling When the planchet is struck, the portion trapped beneath the dies expands in all directions. The thin copper plating is subjected to tensile as well as compressive stress. The tensile stress causes the copper plating to rupture, exposing the underlying zinc.
The area at the bottom & outside of both letters is the area I'm talking about. "split plate doubling"
Okay, I'm confused. You said that the underlying zinc is exposed, but I don't see that it is. I see it on the inside of the letters, but not on the outside. Chris
I'm out of town, I'll take a closer look when I return. Now that see the area your talking about. Some time us old geezers can't see the forest because of the trees.
Sure looks a "Broken Hub" . I don't find a any reference to one on a 1992 Cent. I'll take a look at my inventory when I get home. This link shows a 1969, note the E in CENT looks alot like your 1992. Scroll down to Broken Hub. http://www.lincolncentforum.com/terminology-list-b/
