Hey everyone. I've posted this coin on here before but in a different forum. I've seen where a similar 1983 penny that looks similar to mine sell for over $5000. I can't find any sales of the particular coin that I have. It's not in the best of shape, but I would like to have your opinion on its possible value. Thanks for any help.
5000 is unrealistic. What you have is a nice cud, and is that a clash E from ONE reverse? Cuds sell for less than a $100 and that is in Mint State.
I agree with Cud. But the value for such an issue is way less than $50.00 Don't believe all you see on ebay or etsy or any website that lists errors for ridiculous prices. We won't lead you astray!
CUD? I see a damaged coin that has been hit hard enough to wipe out the letters on the obverse and bulge out the reverse.
It's definitely a Cud (Die Break) on the Reverse. The Obverse shows the weakening in the area due to the metal of the planchet flowing into the die break
Cool! I haven't seen a CUD first hand. I think any error makes a coin special. Maybe one day, one will drop one in my mailbox.
Link to the auction record please? I see very few 1983 zinc cents having sold in that range. I checked coinfacts and Heritage - and on Heritage, three out of the top five 1983 cents are on wrong planchets. In fact, the highest sale for a CUD I could find was $79.00.
I would think that the combo of errors should add a small premium to the coin. Floating clashes are quite rare IMO, add the nice cud. I could see a few bidders push up the final price.
Maybe you're right. He did say it as past-tense, but I suppose he could be looking at current listings by insane people, instead of completed listings.
These type of error that have a piece of the die flip over and shatter the corresponding die face. It should be recognized like we appreciate the founding currency of this nation. I would just like to add that this isn't a one of a kind error, for it to be on cuds, they have examined more than one example probably more than 5. The real money happens when the sales stop going private.
Thanks for your input. May I ask your opinion on what would be best to do with this coin? I haven't been able to find any sales of the exact one that I have. Would it be worth grading? Ebay? Thanks
https://www.greatcollections.com/Au...keywords=lincoln cud&af_gd_min=1&af_gd_max=70 That link should work to show you Lincoln cent cuds sold on great collections. You'll notice that sold prices for MS coins are around $80-120. For the very few AU coins, around $20-25. While your coin is more unique, it would also be a details grade. So probably at best, you'd break even on the grading fees. If you don't want to keep it, put it on ebay with an accurate description and link to here: http://www.maddieclashes.com/fdc-1c-1993-01/
