Coin Series

Most people love the Morgan Dollar Series. I own a few common dates, but I’m personally not a big fan of them. Mainly because once they get into the UNC grades I struggle with pinpointing a grade. Is there a particular coin series that y’all aren’t big on that others seem to love?

I'm going to get backlash for this but I'm not a big fan of modern Lincoln's, Peace dollars and Morgan's somewhat.
Love Older Nickels (shield, Buffalo's) and older Dimes as well.

 

I been collecting half a century and have a mental block with buffalo nickels. I have a few representative pieces buy I instinctively avoid them because I struggle so trying to grade them.

 

Three series that "everyone loves" that do absolutely nothing for me...

Morgan dollars--IMO, the ugliest silver design ever produced by the mint.

Lincoln cents--the wheatback design is ok, but that obverse---ugh.

20 dollar Saints...nice design, but nothing can overcome that baby crap yellow color.

 

If the color of your gold coins puts you off, I'd be happy to relieve you of the burden.

Do you really find that Saints in general have a different color from other gold issues? I've read about color differences among mints due to different gold sources, but I don't recall anything about Saints having their own particular color...

 

I have no use for popular grades and how to sort them. Every coin in my collection of 75 years holds a spot based upon eye appeal. If I like it I don't care if anyone else does. I have coins that are mid grades that I call awesome. All you need to do is tell me that you have a very nice Morgan or a set of them and you really like them.

It is much easier to put together a set all based on eye appeal than a set of all the same MS grade.

 

Gold in general is an ugly color. Pretty much any yellow is horrible.

As for relieving me of the burden of gold you are quite welcome to all the yellow gold I own. Even my wedding band is white gold.

 

I could never get hooked on American Silver Eagles. I had a couple of fairly large partial sets and just couldn't get interested in them.

I know that there are a lot of collectors who really like them. When I was a dealer, I used to watch an old guy who sat at the coin show table next to mine who carefully looked at each piece and bought them every month. He must have had a huge collection, all hand picked.

Given the games the mint is playing with them now with all of the finishes and "limited editions" I'm even more glad I never got hooked on the series.

I have also never been a big Buffalo Nickel and Washington Quarter fan. Those two series just never grabbed my attention beyond the type coins as Proofs.

As for Morgan Dollars, they have interesting history in the battles over "cheap money" and "free silver." That led me to collect these sets in Capital Plastic holders and have one Morgan Dollar in Proof as a type coin.



When I was dealer, I loved to get Morgan Dollar want lists. Filling them was easy. All of the date and mint mark combinations are always available.

 

I have zero interest in anything the mint sells, but they seem to be popular. I don't have anything against the popular stuff like Morgans, Lincolns and $20 Saints, but I don't pursue them myself. I have more fun with series that haven't been fully (or accurately) researched like Barber dimes.

 

Yeah. I just can’t guess Buffalo nickels. I like them to much and just want what I can get

I have very few coins. Each one mostly means something to me. A few I have found on my own. Mine tell me stories somehow. And I share them on the bus and with the grandbabies

 

True and pure........the basis of honest and undoubted collecting. You are a true Gem mi'lady.

 

I didn't start collecting until my mother passed. My father passed before my mother, but she decided that she would keep everything as is, so, I had to wait 8 years before my mother passed and I could see the coins. My brother and I shared his collection. It wasn't a great collection, but he had some nice coins. My mother passed in 2005 and we made the division of the coins. I had no idea what I was doing. I hadn't learned about Cointalk yet. However, I was able to start a friendship with a couple of coin dealers. I wasn't too keen on Morgans nor Peace coins. I did like the American Silver Eagles. I got 3 1988 ASEs and a few more in that era. I started collecting ASE's in abought 1990. I have bought the ASE's every year since then. It's been a chore sometimes to make sure I got each special ASE. It's been a rush. Thank goodness I'm in good health.

I’ve enjoyed reading the replies. I tend to go after whatever catches my eye when it comes to collecting. My collection is a mix and match of coins. I haven’t gotten into silver eagles yet. I just started a junk silver collection.

 

I'm primarily a world collector, but do collect certain U.S. types. Three that people love, but I have never seen the appeal of are Morgan dollars, bust halves and standing liberty quarters. Poorly just a personal choice, but not a big fan of any of those designs.

 

Barbers Liberty design is pretty unattractive in my opinion. I put together a complete set of halves and sold the set after getting tired of looking at them.
I have a nice example in my typeset but still think she is homely.

 

I understand that completely. I have to have one for a type set, doesn't mean I have to like it!
