Found this strange looking 1964 Jefferson in a nickel roll last night. I cannot assess what it is. Was going to conclude PMD and toss it back, but thought I’d tap the Coin Talk Hive Mind first. Thoughts? Assessments?
Looks to be PMD with the marks also involving the rim. Has an appearance of being subjected to a corrosive substance
My first thought, BTW, was obverse lamination combined with a spin in a jewelry cleaning machine that uses ball bearings of something. It’s just weird…
Yes, even the rim has this weird pebbly appearance. I think you are correct. The mystery is what can do that to a coin?
Those probably were just scratches on the front and then the corrosive or abrasive substance finished the job.
Definitely post mint damage. There are visible pockets of originally minted surfaces in tight to the raised devices for easy visual reference: Between the Motto and rim East of Jefferson's head South and East of Monticello
Thought I already posted on this, but guess not. My vote goes to it sitting in a cup holder with Coke spilled all over it, or some other acidic liquid.
