    I would be more inclined to say that Christian Gobrecht designed the large cents from the late 1837s. The general concept was still there, but the treatment of the "Liberty" crown and profile were different.

    I think the problem the mint officials had was that they were not ready to go to the copper-nickel composition and the much smaller cent.

    Feuchwanger issued cents and three cent pieces. He issued the three cent pieces during the Hard Times period and the Civil War. I would like to purchase a Civil War piece some day. Here are the three types I have.

    Cent

    Feuch Cent All.jpg

    The New York State Coat of Arms three cent piece. This is scarce, but not rare.

    One of the Eagle varieties of the three cent piece. This one is quite rare with perhaps less than 10 known. My theory is that this may have been a pattern. There is another more common 1837 dated variety.
