In the late 70's, my wife babysat for a well-to-do couple. Eventually, they decided to move, so after her last babysitting session, they gave her two gold coins as a tip. See the pics. Finally, last year, we sent them to PCGS. $5 graded MS63; $2.5 graded AU55. She was more than pleased and plans to hang on to them. Cal
I'm going to get into babysitting. Would a forty year old guy showing up at your door to watch your kids bother anyone?
My babies are also 40 year old guys. Maybe you could arm-wrestle them for coins. They're both 6 ft 2 in and fit. Cal
I used to clean golf clubs at a well-to-do place as a teen in the early 70s and thought a couple of bucks was a pretty good deal.
The value of those to someone is all relative. A "well to do" couple might own 100 of those or many more. What's it matter giving 2 away? Nothing to them. A pretty big deal to a kid. I like to hear about charitable instances like this. Cool you got them graded. Score. Somebody that spends alot of time taking care of your kids can be a closer relationship than people without kids realize. That's a pretty valuable person in your life. If I get a bonus at work the first person I think about sharing it with is our babysitter who's very fair.
I agree. Having 2 kids myself, a third one on the way, our babysitters have a special place in our heart.
Remember in the 1970's those coins were worth maybe $30 - $50. It was still a real good tip but nothing mind blowing. Even less if it was before 1975.
You take good care of the people who take good care of your children, that was nice of them to do that. Its cool she kept them after all this time.
I knew gold wasn't as valuable as today but I had no idea that it was still pretty low like a decade ago. If anybody wants to take a look at historical gold prices, here's a good link: http://www.kitco.com/scripts/hist_charts/yearly_graphs.plx Why did my parents spend money on diapers in the 80s when they could have bought gold instead?
Hmmm, I don't even know where to start with this I mean there are just so many different levels, so many different aspects or points of view from which I could respond. First of all, babysitting. Well, that is after all what I do. Yeah, I babysit all of YOU ! Every day ! And you range in age from the youngest YN to those who are older than dirt - like Frank. And as everybody knows, ya always have to keep an eye on Frank And not only do I not get tips, I don't even get paid - nada, zilch, nuttin !
