The spear is from an HJB list, years before I was associated with the firm. The ROMA monogram is from a Gorny sale. There's a little story surrounding that one: Alan Walker was my agent then. I called him with my bids; he told me he couldn't accept my bid because he already had a bid from Charles Hersh on the coin, albeit a much lower one. I offered to defer to Hersh if his limit would win the lot, with the understanding that my bid would reenter the auction once Hersh's bid was surpassed. I wasn't too worried about losing the coin (which I badly wanted) because I was pretty sure Charles' bid was nowhere near enough. In the event, it wasn't and (obviously!) I did win the coin. The next time I saw Hersh, probably in NY, he thanked me quite cordially. This was a change; he had been rather cool and aloof to me up to then. Sadly, Charles passed away before a friendship could fully develop. I asked him if he already had the type; it turned out that of course he did. He wanted this because the A in the monogram was formed differently than on his example. I really like the OP coin. I would've been interested in it if I needed that variety.
Wow, that's an awesome OP RR-addition (congrats, Carthago) ... => yup, I love the tassels!! (sweet detail) Ummm sadly, my only Pre-200-BC-AR-Roman-Republic example is this ol' Victoriatus
WOW, Super lovely examples...and the OP is one of the finest examples of artistry that I have yet seen---CONGRATS @Carthago !!!! My best example of Roma and the Dioscuri:
Great backstory. I know RBW was good friends with Hersch. Unfortunately, the same fate befell me with RBW as I was only introduced to him shortly before he passed away as well. I was able to talk with him a bit about one of his coins I bought that I found had belonged to HP Hall, which he didn't realize. He was quite pleased.
