Ok so I finally figured out what has happened to my beloved 1982 "swirl" penny.... So if you build a sand castle but don't put enough sand in the bucket what happens? ... The castle part is void, right? ... My penny is the same concept. I think they used a 1981die with a 1982, 2.7g planchet. Because after all... It was a transition year. N I would bet money that the stamping machine makes a twisting motion when it stamps. It's plausible. Very possible.
No, sorry to say, there is absolutely no twisting motion when a coin is struck. The dies are fixed and do not move in relation to each other. That scenario is just not possible.
Also coins are not struck in a stamping press, Planchets are. If your going to be petty, get it right.
Great imagination.. But not plausible at all. All the reasons why your Cent is not a Mint Error of any kind was given to you on your original thread for the 'swirl cent' https://www.cointalk.com/threads/what-happened-to-this-coin.357422/ By the way.. 3 years later and you still haven't send it in to a third party grader for grading and attribution? Oh and congrats on the grandbaby
Or: your cent weight 3.1g when it was struck, then someone ground away 0.4g worth of material to produce a novelty.
Looks to me like someone was practicing their craftsmanship with a cheap raw material (final cost: 1 cent). (Unrelated note: I've re-imaged my laptop, and Safari is quite sure that "their" in the sentence above should be "there" or "they're". I'm a little worried they may be training Safari's grammar checker on raw Twitter posts.)
Damaged, and not a mint error coin of any kind or type. Simply, your coin did not leave the US Mint looking like that - someone altered the coin.
Nothing you’ve hypothesized is remotely close to reality. If it were a weak strike the devices would have the same weakness evenly across the coin. Also, there is no twisting or swirling with the dies when the blanks are being struck. Send your cent off to PCGS an have it authenticated. It’s been a while since we’ve had a troll get the sort of reaction you did. So I thank you for the entertainment of your original thread.
I’m sorry to say but your coin is damaged as it was altered after it left the mint. Congratulations on the grandchild.
