Yes I am happy, if that is really what you did. Doing the right thing is what matters.

I could not agree with you more Steamandlight. If those coins had gone into that coinstar---- that would have been a tragedy. Don't let some other folks harsh your buzz. I am happy for your score...

Thanks for your candor - it helps with my making sense of everyone's hunting patterns.

Check this out - This monster score took place in your neck of the woods, and was reported on Treasurenet a few weeks back.

    What do you think?

I am not sure what to say, if legit great score and I tend to think it is legit as he invited you back to his home...that is something someone who had something to hide would not do.

Wonderful story... I guess I misjudged you; you're not a bad guy but one clearly worthy of sainthood (roll eyes here).

Seriously though, while it was a great (and as always, one-sided) story, it couldn't be any more convenient. Who would've guessed this individual just happened to live in an affluent neighborhood and simply wanted to dump grandpa's collection which they card nothing about; after all, they're so wealthy that, even though you made it perfectly clear they easily could've pocketed 10x or more your pitiful offer, they didn't even care! Yay! Opps... that's right; I almost forgot.

What is interesting is that you have avoided an accusation made, and intentionally repeated, in numerous posts yet are willing to spew all these fantastic "details". Did you tell this individual how much, based upon metals alone, the collection was really worth? It's okay, just say you did... it'll only help your case for canonization.

You should write fairy tales for a living, dear sir; don't let such a fine talent go to waste.

Funny how the 2 Neg. detectives had nothing to cry about regarding the 1942/1 Mercury $30K SCORE, when that poster knew the eBay seller had no idea what they were selling, from grampies collection.
Should that CT member or would THEY or any treasure hunter have PM'd the seller to tell them of their mistake?
How about when other members go picking in the scrap box at any LCS or coin show.
Would Anyone have told the dealer that they placed a 1972 DD 4-0-1 in the box? NOT!!!

Back in 1980, sophomore year, I sold my Jefferson Davis Confed stamp to a Boston Dealer so I could have spending doe for New Years Eve. In the $50 2 $20s and a $10, he gave me, out of the register draw a $20 with 2 upside down plate die strikes.
Should I have walked back to him and given it back for a spendable bill??? Better yet, I spent the $30 and went back to him a year later where he gave me $200 for the note. Then I told him he had handed it to me as payment that last year.
I'm sure the 2 Neg. Detectives would have just coughed up their windfalls, instead, like god fearing collectors. LOL Wish I'd have kept it, now. COL

Let's see now... one was a perfectly legitimate pick, offered openly on a retail venue while this, well, wasn't. Even if you choose to believe the OP's fairy tale, the apples to oranges comparisons are idiotic.

If I need to get out the crayons and draw pictures for you, please let me know.

My apologies common sense isn't your strong suit, sir. If you want to dish, you had better be able to take as well.

Oh, and jealousy over being a common thief? I think not.

Agreed, or they would have been rolled up by a service and roll searchers would have found them.

What the heck does that mean?

And I enjoyed hearing your story as told and congratulated your good fortune.

About 10 years or so ago [perhaps longer] I got a new client, who related that he tried to sell his silver [inherited] coins to a couple of coin dealers, who did not want them.

He then went to work and turned them in to be used as change in the store, a large regional store.

So, yeah it happens. By the way, he turned in over $1,000 (face) of silver.

and, yeah, he and the family were not collectors. I asked if he had any left, nope, and others they just spent.

Well, I, for one, would like to hear more about what you find in the lot.

I really can't explain why certain posters are continuing to read a "fairy tale" that seems to fill them with such anger. When I come across a thread with someone making claims I don't believe, sometimes I'll give them a poke or two, but usually I lose interest pretty quickly.

I'd also point out that the forum has an "Ignore" feature -- click on a username, and the box that pops up has an "Ignore" link. I don't use it myself, but I've been tempted in the past. (Not, FWIW, by any of the posters in this thread.)

The coin counting machine wouldn't have accepted most of those coins anyway. It rejects silver coins and there is a sign on the machine that says that it rejects Eisenhower dollars (I assume it doesn't accept any large dollar coins) and that it doesn't spit them into the reject bin, it just keeps them but doesn't give credit for them so the person is out a dollar each. If this person tried to put these coins in the machine, it would have rejected the silver, stolen all the big dollar coins and only accepted the pennies and the small dollars. It wouldn't know what to do with a large cent. It would have frustrated the person and they would lose all those large dollars. You did this guy a favor.

There used to be a little bodega near my apartment. I had asked the clerks to stick any "big coins" (halves and larger) back for me. I got an Ike and a 1968 half dollar. One day they had a Morgan in pretty good condition. I got it for $1. I posted about it here and everybody jumped down my throat. If I hadn't bought it, it would have been deposited in the bank and who knows what would have happened to it. The guy at the store had no interest in collecting coins and just wanted his $1. I took advantage of nobody and I saved the coin from going to the bank.
