Found a couple of Chinese examples today on the Bay and they were eventually removed.

They look like casts and have some common “defects”/ markers I noted and wondered if anyone has seen a genuine example like this?

    1921 marks combo 2.jpg

The one major obverse mark is a kind of “blob” where the genuine example has a “D”.

The reverse has notable “damage” on the “C”.

I later found another listing from a major dealer and notified him of the issues...

    Best, Jack.

Wow -- it looks almost as if someone noticed the D was missing from the "original", and punched it in incuse before making a new set of dies.

When I was camping on new eBay BIN listings a few years ago, there was a fairly steady stream of fake classic commems. I guess it's still lucrative enough to continue.

Interesting; I did find another example with a different "look" but similar main marks:

There's also a hole in the spar (?) that appears to be on both examples.

I suppose it might fool somebody but the stormy sea looks like garbage on the fake, whereas it's such a compelling feature of the design on a real one.

Also on the last one but again this example looks different; more struck-like than casty to my eyes...

So many folks mistake that marking for a mint mark, when in reality, it's the designers initial.......

An innocent question. Are these counterfeit coins that are coming from Chinese sources considered legal tender? And, if so, wouldn't the US Treasury be interested in prosecuting the counterfeiters?

If the feds were half as vigilant as Jack, this activity may slow down.

How would the US Treasury (or any other Federal branch) prosecute a foreign national for activity outside US borders? Especially when that activity isn't against the laws of the nation where it's taking place?

Of course, the illegality occurs upon import and subsequent sale. Since they're not being passed off as currency, the US Treasury / Secret Service doesn't seem to care much.

Anyone think this may be genuine and a candidate for the source example of the bad ones?

I don't think that one is genuine. As mentioned above, the waves look like junk, the lower hat brim on both sides disappears before intersecting with the pilgrim's head, etc.

Images for later when the listing is gone. It shares the markers identified above.
