I have a backlog of items purchased since August of last year that have not been imaged. Just a bit frustrated with the quality of the USB shots. I'm starting to image some of the more interesting ones. Two Cyprus Piastres. The 1879 had an awful odor I have never experienced with a coin before. Spent some time soaking in alcohol and then acetone to fix the problem.
They are both really nice looking coins, show their age well. That "awful odor" you mention; that is a first for me. I have never met a stinky coin before. Wonder what the heck caused it? Guess I might as well post a coin, bunch of new arrivals sitting on the desk here. Bahawalpur, 1/4 anna, 1940.
I guess that is better than my first idea; that it had been buried with a rotting body. I used to have several jade cicadas I picked up in Taiwan. I was told they had been placed in the mouths of dead bodies, which were left to decay naturally in a crypt, and often acquired a brownish color from the blood of the corpse. I got a lot of coins which came from cemeteries also.
Great info! The thought had occurred to me about death having something to do with it. This coin is quite dark in hand. It didn't shows signs of dirt and the alcohol and acetone stayed real clear. I was thinking it was an "organic" odor when I opened the package. Would have thought it passed through the gut of an elephant if it was from Ceylon. Another recent purchase. Eritrea - Lira, 1890R
That is a real beauty! If I saw it for sale or auction, I would be right after it. OK, another of my esoteric jitals, which I seem to be hooked on lately. Delhi Sultans, Ala al-Din Mas'ud, BI Jital, c. AD1242-1246
I love those Danzig coins, only have a couple small AE ones. Here is another new one, Western Satraps, Visvasimha II, AR drachm, c.AD275-282
I was happy to be the high bidder on two coins that I've been wanting for a while: The 5 Mark will look great alongside my collection of Zeppelin letters, one of my other pointless endeavours
