All right so let's just get this out on the table because I, myself, and sick to death of the attitude that I get from the people who've been in this industry for decades. not everyone, but you know who I'm talking about. I am out there reading, reading, reading, reading. I'm researching. I have a dozen or more websites bookmarked on my computer. I bought some guy from on here is coin grading book I bought the Mega Red book I have books galore that I have ordered. All these that I am accessing on a daily basis. But there's still that doubt of is it really what it looks like? or is it something?? or am I missing something ?? or can I learn about something that I'm not that familiar with?? or something new?? That's why there are forums, I thought, like coin talk to come to to seek a more expert opinion. But the attitude, the sarcasm and being the butt of jokes that us newbies get from the established people is ridiculous. Now, I do understand that there are newbies who don't take the time to research and to try and learn on their own before they come with a stupid question. I do understand that. But I'm going to tell you guys something right freaking now. I got a copy of newsmatic news in the mail the other day and guess what's on the front page? Oh shield nickel error discovered! The coin is from 1867. 1867! Do you know that means? This coin has been out there How long before someone found it? So what's the possibility that somebody else can find another coin that hasn't been discovered? Oh sure, I understand it's slim but it can be done! And I do understand that what's the chance of getting something in circulation? Oh, it can be slim but it's still done!! or people would not look. I understand that the odds are astronomical but that doesn't mean that people should be blown off, joked about or have to face sarcasm when they come to this site. And it doesn't mean you should be, --oh well, heaven forbid if a newbie finds it before one of us, oh God! Let me give you a scenario. Constantly telling me, " oh no I couldn't have found this. oh no (If it's a undiscovered error) that's not going to happen. I'm not going to find it. Talking to a person who works at a coin grading company right? He said he has a jar of pennies. some of them are from their fathers collection. I said, " oh well you should let me buy them. so I can go through them. You're never going to have the time to go through them." And he goes " oh no, no! I can't do that! there might be something in there!" But yet every time I come to him with something he sits there and tells me, " oh it's astronomical, oh you can't find anything, oh you're never going to find anything." But for some reason you can find something? Is that what I'm getting here? If it's so astronomical then why do you keep that jar of coins to go through little by little as the time goes by? Why do you think that there might be something in there for you?? but I wouldn't be able to find something in my coins? Is it because of my lack of experience?? Because the odds are so astronomical? No, I don't think that's what he was getting at. I think it's because he doesn't want to see a newbie come a long and find anything. The attitude that some of you exude makes it really disheartening to the people who are trying to learn this field and and who are interested in coins. You should be happy that there are other people younger generations who want to carry on the work that y'all done. who are looking towards y'all up to you as mentors, as experts who we come to for help. You should be happy about that. Now, I understand that if it's someone coming who hasn't done the research and doesn't know what they're talking about and they ask a stupid question-- cuz they're too lazy to try and find out on their own-- I understand that. but the majority of us are not like that... And if there wasn't a chance in hell then why do so many people do it? why do you do it? Please take this into account the next time you go to answer someone's question. And if all you can do is be sarcastic or make a joke or be nasty then just pass up that thread and go to the next please. Because it's really disheartening to the point that I almost want to just throw up my hands and say "why even bother?" I don't understand why we can't be taken seriously. I don't understand because we don't have some half a million dollar collection in our closet that we can't be considered like the one who does. I don't understand why so many of y'all look down on us .. to the point where you got to be mean and nasty and sarcastic and make jokes. You ever thought it was fun getting picked on? And it is possible to find stuff in circulation I have to be optimistic about that. And it is possible to find a new discovery I have to be optimistic about that. Cuz if not then what am I wasting my time on all this for ?? learning and finding and researching and searching?? It would be futile right? Isn't that the excitement of the hunt ??the possibilities? So quit throwing up all the walls please. And can you be a little more understanding of us newbies? The ones who are really trying? I thank you for your time.
you got to take the good with the bad in this hobby, trust me when i started back in 2003 it was much rougher then it is now for newcomers but one learns how to filter out the critics and go with the one who know their stuff
I kind of know what you are talking about. People on here (and I include myself) sometimes tend to be sarcastic (usually meant in fun) and sometimes just get tired of explaining a coin found in a parking lot didn't come from the mint in that condition. I sincerely try to either ignore REALLY obvious (I know just to me) questions or to provide the poster with some sort of answer. Happy collecting.
@Kristine Garrant It has happened to more people than you can imagine. But it happens on all forums and social media. Someone will post a minor die clash or die chip, and someone here will, without being asked, say, it's not worth anything. Throw it back. Then I will see the same person find something similar and post like it was a major event. Gonna' happen. You can't fix stupid. But like you are suggesting that people pass it by, they can't because they can't fix their own stupidity, then you need to ignore that person and only answer to those that treat you with respect. We had @Heater here who was working exclusively on doubled die Roosevelt dimes. He was ridiculed endlessly until he finally left. BUT! He contributed many new varieties to John Wexler's listings. I, myself, have contributed many Lincoln cent minor doubled dies. To me, that is a nice, satisfying accomplishment. Just remember that picture of a stork with a frog halfway down his throat that is titled "Never Give Up".
Way to stand up for yourself and others who may not yet have the coins, and may not yet have the experience, but have a sincere love of the hobby, and are not the fleeting members driven to shallow questions by their passion for the quick buck. Good for you, @Kristine Garrant . . .
This I agree with. In fact I pass up tons of threads. Being on this forum for several years, I can assure you we get many more people who haven't done any research. You're on the right side of that at by educating yourself. I'm not a roll hunter or error collector so I can't chime in on any of that, buy you'll have snarky people no matter where you go in life. Best thing about CT is there's an ignore button.
I am truly sorry you feel this way. From what I have seen on your threads you are roll hunting looking for errors. If that is what you desire to do then more power to you and good luck. The problem is the way I see it is this is probably the most difficult thing in coin collecting you are trying to accomplish. I may be wrong on this , but I don't think so. I would suggest you continue doing what you are currently doing, but pick a coin and try to make a collection of those at the same time you are doing what you are currently attempting to do. It could be Jefferson nickels, Roosevelt dimes, Washington Quarters, or whatever. People are here for enjoyment, education in the hobby, or whatever. On a couple of threads I got a response I didn't appreciate so much. But as read other threads I noticed it was their personality and not meant to be personal. i also have noticed they can take sarcasm as well as they give it out. I really don't think anyone is singling you out to be verbalize abuse or be sarcastic to you on a personal level. Last, don't allow yourself to be imtimidated here. Very few of us actually know the other, and few have ever met one another anywhere but here. If you look at the world we live in today, I think the vast majority of the people are A-okay. Don't give up and keep plugging. After the next ten thousand rolls you might find the 1877 IHC I'm looking for.
i was told by some collectors 15+ years ago that this variety doesn't exist. Was shot down big time. I knew I was correct of what I was seeing and I sent the cent to Dr James Wiles. a variety specialist. Now its in the Cherrypickers listing. yahoo !!!! Keep up the good work Kristine.
I do understand the times that folks don't get the notoriety for a find that they may have, we are not here to satisfy your every quest into a coin. We are just some hobbyists and sometimes know it all's. I have put away plenty of coins that others here have destroyed my opinion. That doesn't make me sad, I use it to build more knowledge, so that the next time I can take better photos and describe what I am seeing. The tough treatment only means that some have expected more out of the student. You keep those books, they will pay off if you really love numismatics.
I so get what you're saying. Because like that is like my goal is to discover a variety even though it might not be worth more than face value just to discover it??? like I that's my goal!! like I'm so excited about it lol lol newbie retard i am
Almost definitely. But like I went to a coin small coin show in Raleigh North Carolina and I got dismissed and treated the exact same way. so these comments on Coin Talk is on top of the how I got treated at the coin show. I get enough backlash out there in public on a regular day just from people who never graduated 7th grade. but when I'm so trying to learn something and I'm being honest with my questions... cuz I'm trying to figure it out and it's hard to look at something and say oh this is this and that is that when you're new. I had a friend who took drove all the way to a coin show in Baltimore because he found what he thought was a 1964 satin SMS. They even knew that he was coming. He called the coin grading company and said hey I'm coming. And they treated him like dog poo. The one guy picked up the coin and tossed it on the table like it was nothing. Finally he got them to accept that he wanted to get this graded. He had to fill out a membership for NGC. He wasn't feeling comfortable with how he got treated and everything, so he went back the next day and he asked for his coins back. they couldn't find them!! So for months he kept calling up there and it would say he's next in line and then the phone would hang up on him. He kept calling NGC's headquarters and calling them and calling them. He finally got through. And they finally found his coins!! They were in the new membership whatever cuz he had to fill out a membership at the coin show to get them graded. And guess what? It IS a 1964 SMS satin!!! He's 4 years younger than me, dresses like a younger guy would, new to coins! He doesn't look like your average nusimatic enthusiast. but he's bound and determined with his coin hunting. He hit the jackpot. After hearing his story my heart just went out to him.
As a dealer with over 15 years in the industry (not to mention the fact that I started out as a collector before that), I can tell you that dealers, or 'experts' do this to one another. There is an old saying in the London stamp trade, which I think is telling of all collectibles: 'what is yours is wrong, fake or worthless... what is mine is quality merchandise.' In general, try to surround yourself with reasonable, knowledgeable people who you trust (takes time to find these people), and yes, never stop reading. Generally, I also view each piece using some wise words I got from an 75-year in the business dealer I once worked with (when you think you have found something good): 'rather than 'why IS this what I think it is,' first ask yourself 'why is this NOT what I think it is.' This, I find (if done sincerely), forces me to exercise my healthy pinch of scepticism before consulting others / diving deeper into the literature. Finally, know that the more you know about something, the more you will realize you know little about everything, and vice versa. All this being said, don't get discouraged, there is plenty left to find out there!
Crazy - within a couple of hours of posting the above, I actually ran across a previously unrecorded edge variety on a Scottish Conder token from... 1797. https://norantyki.com/conders-comme...shire-1797-swap-12d-conder-edge-error-dh21var
The following is something I see often that causes problems. Someone new to the hobby joins a forum. In a short time they start to believe they are an expert. Next they feel the need to be the first to reply to every new thread with an opinion stated as fact. Sometimes they are correct but often they are not. This makes it tough on new members with a question and just trying to learn. They don't know who to trust or ignore. I feel it's best to not state something as fact unless, you are really sure you are correct. I don't know how to fix those that come off rude and insulting to new members. I don't see that very often on this site. There is always a nice friendly way to reply to questions.
I also have not responded to many threads over the years. Because I know as soon as I give my honest opinion I will be shot down and spoken to in an inappropriate manner. I can get rough around here.. But I will tell you the truth! Some people can't handle the truth. Some people's feelings get hurt. So.. Do you know what they can do at any time.. Just block the member that doesn't tell them what they want to hear. But the result of doing that is that the person will never fully learn Kristine.. This post wasn't meant towards you. It's my mini venting moment. I feel you and I have done pretty good in our conversations over time. Peace Mr Ed - Specializing in the study and collecting of Mint Errors since 1986
I have not been posting anything in awhile because of researching all these pennies I have lol. I would rather have an honest opinion than having people say yeah it could be an error. I am a very sensitive person and yes I have been hurt by comments but it is usually from people making fun of the post and that has not happened in a long time. I want to learn and this is the place to get best honest opinions of what you have. The other day I was going to post a weird looking penny that on the reverse the wording was upside down in places. I then asked myself what would the pros do so I looked at it closer and took a toothpick to part of it and so enough it lifted right off. I am learning but I am sure in the future I will post a weird looking coin and swear up and down it is an error when it is just PMD and from that I take the comments and accept it lol. Sometimes there are nicer ways for all of us to communicate.
@Kristine Garrant I understand how you feel and I’ve seen it over and over, and not just with you. I wish you the best as you continue in this hobby and hope that one day, you will find a new variety.
I hear you Kristine. Human nature being what it is, on any given day, you may find a person acting rude, or know-it-all, and I'm better than you, but that seems to be the nature of the animal. Please don't let it get under your skin and stop you from moving forward. I know that when I first came to CT, I was short, and belligerent to some new posters. In my defense, if there is one, my mood was to blame. I wish I could go back and do or say things differently, but that ship sailed. Each member here, is just a human. We have good days, we have bad days. If we knew when to stay quiet on those bad days, the world would probably be a better place, but alas, that just isn't the case. I hope you can look closely at the individual and exactly what they are says, and then see it for what it is. Ignore those that irritate you, and hopefully learn from those that are obviously trying to help you. Keep on looking and asking, learning as you go.
2 thoughts - 1) If you CRH long enough, you will eventually get a discovery piece. It happens quite often, just less so on coins that are more than 100 years old. But as you saw, it did happen. And with so many minor variety coins (e.g., single-squeeze coinage), modern discoveries are happening all the time. So, keep at it...you'll find something. 2) I got jumped on the first time I posted. In fairness to the doubters, I did hit them with something difficult to believe. Sure...I would have appreciated an open mind first, but once I posted photos (always post photos...LOL), they were believers and came clean. And sometimes, the rough-and-gruff (e.g., truth tellers like @paddyman98) have a lot to offer once you get beyond the veneer...and gain their appreciation. Point: give people a chance to redeem themselves. I did that and some rough starts I had have actually worked out quite well...people have things to teach...if you let them.
