Hi guys! I want to show you the coin of my avatar, one of my favourite Valentinian III nummus, hope you like It! Valentinian III, 425-455 AD AE Nummus, minted in Rome, 4th off., ca. 445 AD Obv.: DN VALENTINIANVS PF AVG, bust right. Rev.: VOT XX within wreath, in ex. Q. RIC 2130
I agree with Mat about the portrait. I have a Val III but it's so bad I can't even make out obverse from reverse. Perhaps I need to look for one of these again.
He wasnt the last emperor, after him the Western Roman Empire was rule shortly by Petronius, then Avitus, Majorian, Libius Severus, Anthemius, again very shortly rule of Olybrius, the n Glycerius, Julius Nepos, and finally by Romulus Augustus was rise to Augustus by Orestes, his father and magister militum, meanwhile Nepos goes to Dalmatia. All these emperor rule in a gap of 21 years aprox, since 455, to 476 AD when finally Odoacer deposed Romulus.
No, the last emperor was Romulus Augustus, who was dethroned in 476 by the leader of the mercenary barbarian troops, Odoacer. The show mentioned that year but failed to add in this fact. Barbarian's Rising was pretty good but like a lot of other historical docs from History, it is basically an entry level source for these events. Post-edit: @Valentinianvs answered but I ain't changing my response
Great coin, altough exergue looks more like a C...am I misreading it or is it a particular shape for the era?
Thanks KIWITI! Is no particular shape, numerals for officinae at this time are alpha to epsilon, and I see a Q may be some flat in the "upper side"
I have a couple V III's: Roman Imperial Valentinian III 425-455 CE AE 9mm Rome mint Roman Imperial Valentinian III 425-455 CE AE4 Nummus Victory
Thanks for the update. No need for sorry. I have little interest in this area, I am completing my Imperial Portraits, and I have an "extra" as posted. I will re-attribute. Eventually, the Portraits go to my Grandkids.
that's a great portrait for valetninain iii! contender for best in type maybe even? i suspect i had a valentinian iii, but it was such a turd i never could tell for sure.
One of my favorite Emperors to collect. Mostly victory, votive and cross reverses but always with an odd style. Here's the two victories jointly holding wreath type (VICTORIA AVGG) from the Rome mint:
Cool posts!! The examples posted are exceptional for the Val III types I usually run across for sale......and none for me since I seem to have stopped at Val II.
You had to get me started on Val III bronzes. He did have some more traditional fine style reverses, and these came from the Cyzikus mint. Here's two: Of Val I, II and III only Val III issued cross reverse coins such as the one shown at the top. The "VALENTINIANO" type at the bottom is also only seen on his issues.
Really nice exemplars Brian! tonight I will show the others Val III in my collection. The Valentinian III coins minted in Eastern Empire has VALENTINIANO cause is dative case for latin, in place of nominative case, shown in the Western Empire, VALENTINIANO means "to Valentinianus", Theososius II minted to Valentinianus, suporting him against Johannes, notarius under Honorius that took the power at his death.
I don't have much to show with regards to Val III so I will just sit back and watch what you two post
