Hey, it could be worse. I bid against myself in a Baldwin's auction a few months ago and doubled the cost of my purchase. I sold one of the coins for the equivalent of the winning bid, so it didn't hurt as bad, but I still felt stupid.

You would think their auction software would recognise you as the same bidder and just raise your high bid. Very odd that it bid against you!

@Sallent I think that it is a great coin.
Don't feel so bad. It could have looked like mine.

Like Doug, I'm a little perplexed.....I purposely purchased this example precisely because it wasn't just another Roma/Chariot type.

I assume the coin you meant to continue bidding on was of significantly higher grade with sharper devices than the coin you mistakenly won?

I like the OP coin very much. If you didn't overpay, I'd be happy to buy it from you. Just PM me.

The OP coin is fine. It has a good story as a coin type. It has a good story as a purchase. It has a good thread on CoinTalk. What's not to like?

Not really. The other coin was in a similar state of preservation. I don't buy museum grade qulity, I'm fine with gF, VF, and XF coins.

The problem is that it is not another Roma/Chariot type. Believe it or not, I really like what some here consider boring: Roma, discouri, biggas, trigas, quadrigas, and other traditional RR themes.

My new coin is a little too radical. It doesn't look very Republican. Yes, I have a Scaurus denarius, but at least that one has a quadriga, which makes up for some of that radicalness. Anyway, I'll give this coin a chance Maybe it will grow on me once I receive it. We'll see. Still, I would have rather had my boring charriots.

No, I'm sorry. Today has been a long day. I'm just tired, stressed, and grumpy. I can't wait for the three day weekend to arrive and for the 4rth of July festivities. I didn't mean to snap on you.

why dont you just save on shipping and consign it straight to their next auction?

I like it a lot , you did the right thing too . You didn't seem to over pay as $20 is a cheap lesson plus I'm sure you could find an eager buyer .

Searching on L Thorius Balbus will turn up 9 of these ranging from much better to much worse than yours but half did not sell due to excessive opening bids.

A similar search on L Lucilius Rufus gave only two of with one failed to sell and the other was a fourree that went higher than the solid failure. All this shows is that there is no sense in the auction market.
