Actually... I do and I am happy to see them getting some attention.... I was a rabid young coin junkie when the Ike's were released and I am sure you remember.. We hadn't seen anything new out of the mint since forever so it was exciting to see a modern silver dollar sized coin. I hope to see the Ike's gaining popularity.
I think a lot of us do appreciate the Ike dollar. I know I do, especially knowing his history. A real, down-to-Earth man that made common sense, at least in many areas. The coin you've pictured is one great coin.
I do also! I have a complete set and a complete set of Ike and SBA. You have a beauty there too, thanks.
I really enjoy my Ike collection. I certainly admire what he accomplished in WWII, yet did not seek the limelight.
I remember when they first came out. I was a hit at a birthday party; I stopped by the bank and asked for a new Ike and gave it to the birthday boy.
True, they kinda bore me, but a nice PR69-70 DCAM can turn my head. A little. Bear in mind that I generally have little interest in coins struck during my own lifetime, unless they've got bullion content or are really flashy proofs or have extra cool designs. (There's nothing really wrong with the Ike design, but I wouldn't personally consider it "extra cool".)
I will also say that the Bicentennials have fond childhood associations. My grandfather filled an old horse trough with clean white river sand once upon a time, and seeded it with dozens of Bicentennial Ikes. Then he stood by with a stopwatch while each of us grandchildren was given an allotted amount of time to dig for as many of them as we could find. So yeah, there is that. Having dug a double handful full of those as a kid out of the sand in that horse trough, and walking away with their weight in my pocket, was fun and memorable. (*They were the clads, of course, not the silvers.)
Back in the late 80's / early 90's I was an Ike fanatic, buying and opening mint-sewn bags of 1,000 pieces.
Not a terrific looking coin nor much in demand but I suspect I will put together a set before my collecting days are over. Like Randy mentioned, we young collectors at the time had not seen a large silver dollar in our lifetime. They take me back to a simpler time, the moon landing, and high school, and getting started as a collector. And those huge blank fields make it a challenge to find a really nice one.
