Dueling Submissions - NGC & ANACS shipped in today.

So I've only submitted to ICG in the past (I love ICG, I love the grading and how accessible / helpful the customer service is, and I love the CoinTalk special) but ANACS is having a Spring special - $129 for 10 coins plus $13 per additional (US Mint only) and I had that $150 credit at NGC so I was going to try them too. I'm also preparing an ICG submission, but I'm holding off on that one for a few more pieces. Typically ICG has turned my submissions around in 3 weeks.

Today I shipped the following to NGC - Standard Grading Tier - on 2 Submission forms (Pdf fillable) / separate invoices: First form to NGC - 11 Colonial Coppers - a mix of tokens and state issues. 2nd form to NGC - 4 World coins. No extras, $485 on form 1 and $160 plus $10 handling on form 2. I requested they ship back together, so after my credit and reduced shipping I'm calculating $505 out of pocket. Pretty steep but none qualified for the cheaper "Economy" or "Modern" tiers. I also checked the $0 "Appearance Review" box, whatever that is. I am a bit puzzled that they don't ask you what the coin is - just the country, coin date, mintmark, denomination and MS/PF. So for things like the 1795 Washington "Grate" Half Penny I just put country, "Colonial US"; date of 1795 and denomination of "half penny". I hope they actually identify it on the label as a 1795 "Washington "Grate" Half Penny, Small Buttons, Reeded Edge" which is the basic description for same. There was no VarietyPlus designation for Colonials on their website. I did contact customer service twice for clarification - which wasn't clear - and I included a cover letter asking them to contact me if there was any uncertainty, stating my concerns in this regard. I have purchased Colonial Coppers in NGC slabs, so I know they do them - so I'll trust in the process.

ANACS - 1 submission form (hand filled in) - 15 US Mint coins, mostly early Large Cents & Half Cents, some SLQs, Capped Bust and one 1878 cc Morgan. I also included a 1773 Virginia half penny - I'm not sure that fit in, as it was pre-federal, but we'll see what happens. 15 Coins - 10 for $129 and 5 more for $13 each. I selected "Attribute" on 4 of them, which is an additional $15 research fee each for those. Total with invoice with return shipping and insurance - $299.

Both boxes were shipped USPS Priority - Restricted Insured Signature Required. I am a bit concerned about the NGC submission, especially given the cost, but I'm feeling good about ANACS. The race is on to see which comes back first and how they graded! Any guesses? I hear NGC is slow, but I did go with Standard Tier and ANACS says additional time is necessary for "Attribution" submissions - plus it's the special.

    Best of luck!
NGC was very slow in 2021 and parts of 2022 but has improved lately. So hopefully the wait won't be too bad and you get some nice grades.

You can view NGCs current turn around times on their website based on tiers. I sent 13 coins in on two different tiers with Variety plus ones which was supposed to add 5 days. They were submitted in March. Once they received it took a few days before the box was opened and they were logged into the system. Once they showed up in system online, it took 20 business days from that point to being marked as shipped. Then it took a few days for FedEx to get them back to me. Expect about a month and a half.

This was roughly the current turn around time they had listed on the website (20 business day)

I just put a box out to NGC, priority and certified. I’m not concerned about how long it takes to get them back but I’m always super nervous until they receive them.

Best of luck on all of them. ANACS “specials” remind me of the furniture store that’s had a “going out of business” sale every month for the last 30 years

Anybody read Mote in God's Eye by Niven and Pournelle? One of the best off-earth-contact-with-aliens scifi novels. The aliens were named Moties by humans. Once they learned English, the Moties described individuals of their species who tried unusual things as Crazy Eddies.

How long did it take between the post office delivery and NGC putting the submission in their system?

USPS and NGC indicate that the package (shipped 4/21 Priority) was received on 4/24 but it is not in their system yet - they haven't opened the box and processed the coins into their system. Edit - Update at 5:20 PM EST, ANACS has sent me a receipt, and logging in I can see the submission in their system, with an "expected ship date" of 6/26/2023.

Just renewed my pcgs membership yesterday. Until the others come with something that compares to truview, I don't care how long it takes them to come back.

I finally got my ICG submission in order - which will include my ex-jewelry 1875-cc 20 cent piece that I finally received, some SLQs, some early cents / half cents, some colonials and my 1935 Belgian 100 Francs (Railway Centenary - "the Robot") and a piece of James II Irish Gun Money (May) that I'm excited to see graded. With the CoinTalk special and with 3 for attribution and 2 for conservation and return shipping it's $330 for 20 pieces - so definitely the bargain of the three submissions - though ANACS was $299 for 15, all US, with attribution for 4. NGC was twice as expensive for 15 coins ($683) with two submission forms with no extras (thankfully I do have that $150 credit). I'll ship Priority Insured to NGC tomorrow and then the race will be on to get my 50 coins (15 ANACS, 15 NGC, 20 ICG) submitted back in graded slabs!

Good Lord the humanity........I'd rather spend that kind of money on something already holdered. Debbie Downer (mini) rant over......

I hear that! In general, much of my collecting is now in slabbed graded pieces, but I had all of these raw coins (and still have lots and lots) that I want to go with the slabbed graded sets, so here I am. I don't know if I'll ever spend this kind of dough on submissions again - it's a lot of money for me, but it should be interesting - I think I'll learn a lot from what comes back.

I’m not in love with TPGs but it’s a necessary evil for many pieces to sell at the right price. If I graded everything that would benefit from it, I’d be spending thousands and like @green18 , I’d rather spend that money on coins.

That's why I try to keep up on submissions. So it's only a few hundred at a time. And only a couple times a year or so. I have some i need to send in this summer. Just got back paving and need to get everything else caught up. I have a lot of nice things to go though. Plus the this fall the Morgan and peace proofs are coming. I ordered 2 sets of regular and reverse proofs. So I got that coming too

ICG receives their coins tomorrow. ANACS & NGC both received theirs last Tuesday. ANACS has already put the coins in their system and charged me, though they have an estimated return shipping date of 6/26 (those are on the Spring Special / economy). It will be interesting to see when NGC opens the box and enters them into their system. I still think this NGC submission form is weird, there's no place to list exactly what the coin is, for example, look at line 5 - in the limited space I put, "T, A&L, 1C" but what I expect the label to say is, "1794 TALBOT ALLUM & LEE . NEW YORK, Thick Planchet 1C" and maybe "Letter Edge" but there's no place for that on the submission form. I suppose that's because they don't need me to tell them, but it still seemed odd compared to the ANACS and ICG forms. ngcquest.JPG
