An elephant and a Zebu walk into a bar. The Elephant tells the Zebu..."Here, have some peanuts from the peanut bowl." The Zebu says, "No thanks, I'm watching my weight." The elephant replies, "Come on, don't be a square." Hahahaha...a square, get it? A square? Uhm, no? Never mind. Look at what I purchased today! Kings of Baktria Indo-Greek Apollodotos I Circa 180/174-165/160 B.C. Square Drachm AR Square Drachm 20mm. 2.42g. Elephant standing right; (RK) monogram below. BASILEWS APOLLODOTOU SWTHROS Zebu standing right; W below. Bopearachchi 4E; SNG ANS 324-327 Good VF. Light toning in devices. It's admittedly a bit bright for my tastes, but I'm sure it will look great once it picks up a little toning over time. I've been looking more towards the east lately to bring a little variety to my Eurocentric ancient coin collection...and I think this one will fit nicely with my goal of diversifying my collection. It is Bactrian, it has Greek text on it, but Indian-style themes with the elephant and the zebu, not to mention the square shape. So, what do you guys think? About the coin, not my sense of humor, ok?
Thanks for reminding me, I forgot to post it, but it's been fixed now. It is between 180 BCE and 160 BCE.
Nice addition. If those are the sellers pictures, the coin itself may be a bit darker. I've noticed that a lot of sellers either use too much light or photoshop the image afterwards. Oh and what joke? there was a joke in there? jk.
Very nice find - you don't see these coins so "perfect" very often. I've only handled a few, but I would call them billon. Icerain is right, it is probably darker in hand, although yours appears to be of fairly good silver.
So I related your joke to my Baktrian drachm... it didn't seem amused. I told it to lighten up, but perhaps it just didn't get the joke. As you can see, it's not too bright ... BAKTRIA, Greco-Baktrian Kingdom, Apollodotos I AR Drachm. 1.63g, 15.3mm x 14.8mm. Taxila mint, circa 174-165 BC. SNG Cop 337. An elephant and a zebu walk into a bar. Patrons quickly assess the danger of the situation and leave hurriedly.
An elephant and a zebu walk into a bar, and the baboon tending bar asked, "Kwacha having gents?" The elephant and zebu look at each other with great surprise and say, "OH MY GOD, A TALKING BABOON!!!"
An elephant and a zebu walk into a bar and order a couple of beers. "That will be $20," says the bartender. "You know, we don't see many elephants and zebus in here." The elephant says, "Well at these prices, no wonder."
I cannot ever quite my day job, its the only way I can pay for getting carried away on auction sites and pay the normal bills Thanks for posting those nice Bactrian coins/ and the excellent jokes
