Hi all be kind I have a 2000 d penny where the obverse is half coated with copper. It is a silver color and it shows no rotting out. You know me when in doubt I ask questions. Looks like a zinc penny that someone scraped against concrete or something.

Exactly. It was heavily scraped, exposing the inner zinc core.

    Roadkill. :(

We'll be kind to you, but something was not kind to that poor coin! ;)

Toss it into a wishing well, and I'll wish you lifetime of prosperity, how's that?

Spend it before it's too bad for your bank machine to take it.

Probably already is. More bang for the buck cent with my wishing well idea. ;)

Sometimes they are so gross when coin hunting I throw them away, nasty zinc coins.

Its fun to do this with a dremel tool working like a router. If you have it locked just a tiny amount lower than the coin face, you can made a lot of "valuable " error coins for etsy and ebay. IMO, Jim

It is the color of the inner Zinc.

Leave it in your cup holder in your car for a bit. Hydrozincite loves the exposure to moisture and hot air in a car. Rapid deterioration under the 'proper' conditions.

After living in TN. I completely agree new coins will turn over night. The Mntn west doesn't have that affect. I have a glass jar that I have been filling since 2019 with unc coins from circ. And they are nearly as perfect as I found them. Still Brilliant red,

Precisely. There's a bunch of 1982's floating around somewhere out there just like this one too. We used to do that "magic" trick with pennies while waiting for the school bus to show up. Nice brand new penny, place it on the ground, grind it into the cement and voilà, it now has a shinny silver look to it where the copper has been scrapped off.

It’s a zinc cent and the missing copper coating has been removed. In other words, it’s damaged. Stated as nicely as I can.

Guess I'm late to the party . . .again. Just a lousy Zincoln, missing some of the copper coating. Put in an environment with any pollutants, and it will start to rot, until you have nothing.

This cent should definitely be wishing well bound.
