I managed to get to the Tukwila PNNA show yesterday. I was on the floor nearly all day and bought very little US, left with some Spanish-American pieces in my pocket. Crossed a big item off the bucket list. I managed to obtain an 8 Reales cob - and it was remarkably inexpensive. I will just say I paid less than $100 for this coin. As far as I can tell it has the Madrid mintmark (MD) and the date is 1651. On these irregularly shaped, rudimentary coins, neither are guaranteed to show up. Besides the few scrapes on the coin, it doesn’t seem to show any obvious signs of circulation.
Less than a hundred bucks? Iridescent gold cabinet toning? For an 8R cob? I'm no specialist on cobs, but I'd say you got a steal, my friend!
True, I suppose. I’d have a hard time judging a clipped piece from a crowded, undersized flan on something like this, I guess, but regardless, I think it sounds like a solid purchase.
I hope that some others that know these to chime in. I don't know what the weight should be in reference to the OP's. Also was this clipped because the planchet was too heavy? Or was the cob shaved clipped in Circ? I just don't know enough about them.
Weight is 25.6g, about a gram and change underweight. One of the edges of the coin is jagged, so the coin has almost certainly been clipped.
