I posted this coin back in 2007....a long time ago... I have recently taken new (much better I think/hope) photos and would like to see how you would grade it. I bought it in the late 80's from a B&M auction where they graded it VF30. Do you all agree with this grade today? lower, higher?? It's a B-5, R-1 'bar' variety .
It's a lovely coin. I personally would have said VF20, but I know the TPGs and other professionals grade this earlier material a bit more liberally than I might guess, and they're the experts, of course. I think VF30 is appropriate. Regardless of the technical grade, it's very eye appealing.
I think that it is still a VF-30 today. This variety was lightly struck and had weaker details that some Flowing Hair Dollars from the day it was made. This was my first Flowing Hair Dollar. It is the same variety. I bought this piece as a VF. When I had NGC grade it, they called it EF. The adjustment marks made this one a bit harder to sell, but I still got a good price for it.
VF-30 looks right to me. Pretty clean coin for mid-grade. I'm still looking for a Flowing Hair in this grade, the last dollar I need for the type set. Should have bought one three years ago because the price has gone through the roof the last two years. I think, if you're so inclined, that it would be worth your while to submit for grading. I don't think you will get anything less than a 30 and it might go better.
Agreed, though I don't recall if @Eduard does that much with third-party certification. Are you in Europe, Eduard? (Where did I get that idea? I forget.) Anyway, if that is the case, I suppose you could send it to PCGS in Paris, if you were so inclined.
The price was through the roof over a decade ago. This one, which replaced the piece I posted earlier, was in the low 5 figures. It has luster in the protected areas, and is really an EF-45 in my opinion. PCGS graded it EF-40. Buying one with as much detail as I have on my AU half dime and half dollar flowing hair coins is beyond my ability to pay.
Light wear on the collar, a few rim dings, a bit of high point wear. Still a very nice VF-35. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you all for your comments and opinions. This is a coin which I intend to have graded one day (been saying this for years now...).
If you do have it graded, I think that there is a small chance that it could come back as “cleaned.” It’s probably market acceptable, and given the more lax standards these days, it will probably sail right through the grading room.
I think vf 25 mine a vf 30. Eye appealing and nice strike. Not strict original surfaces an old dip but market acceptable. I’m glad to have bought it when I did. Adjustment marks not horrible and a couple scratches are in the holder
