    Hi,

I sell low-value coins on eBay. Since they're low value (usually about $1.25) and I want to keep shipping cheap to be competitive, I only use tracking for multiple purchases. Today I got an email from Paypal that a customer has opened a chargeback dispute saying it was an unauthorized purchase. The original purchase was in April for a grand total of $2.20. For some reason the chargeback is only for $1.31. I've never had this happen before. I went to Paypal and it seems that my only choices are to provide tracking info (which I don't have since I didn't use it) or "accept liability." Accepting liability makes it sound like I'm admitting doing something wrong, so I hesitate to do that. Otherwise it's a small amount and I honestly don't know why the buyer would have bothered. I'm not sure what happens if I ignore it. I'm sure some of you have experience with this. Should I just accept liability, and are there any negative consequences to doing so besides losing my $1.31?

No tracking and you lose period. Accept liability and be thankful you only ship cheap items without tracking. Consider it a loss and move on

Yup, consider it a loss. And a tiny one at that. It should not hurt your account at all. If there is a place to add a note, just say you shipped with no tracking, so are giving a full refund. Why waste your time selling such low dollar coins anyways? Doesn't seem worth your time.

It's more of a hobby than a business. I can make some money to buy other coins with. I can go to a coin shop and buy foreign coins for 15 cents and sell for $1.25. Sell enough and you make a few hundred bucks and can buy some better coins that you need for your collection. I'm not quitting my day job or anything.

Good for you dear fellow. Ain't looking for the dollars, just a few nickels and quarters.......but they do add up. Best of luck with your endeavour. :)

How much profit, after ebay, paypal, shipping, packaging, etc? You could be spending more money on gas than you are making. I'm not saying you have to sell $100 coins, but if you are making less than $1 per sale, is it really worth your time?

Apparently, he has decided it is worth his time, and in my most humble opinion, should be left at that. There's an old saying that goes... "it takes all kinds"; if there were no people like the OP selling such low dollar material, those who collect them may not have access to what they enjoy.

Profit is often important, yes, but it isn't always everything.

Ideally people purchase multiple coins at once. That is the most profitable way to do it. I've had someone buy 80 coins at once, which was great. That is rare but it has happened. I only list when there is a free listing promotion running because fees would be a killer. I charge a little extra for shipping to pay the Paypal fees so the net profit on one coin is probably about 80 cents or so. It's not hugely profitable but at one point I had more than $200 in my Paypal account just from selling cheap coins. I do the work while I'm watching a baseball game or something so it's not a big hassle. This is the first time in awhile that I've had an "item not received" or similar case.

Woah, I accepted the liability and now I got an email from Paypal saying I'm also getting a $20 chargeback fee. They neglected to mention this beforehand. This is getting a lot worse than I thought it was.

So how did they explain a "partial" chargeback? And by accepting the chargeback, you admitted personal liability for something wrong....

Your only options are to accept it or prove that you shipped it to the buyer's address. If you don't have tracking, you can't do that.

I've never heard of a chargeback fee before, anyone else heard of it? I wonder if the guy had his paypal funded through his credit card and did a charge back through the credit card. They might have assessed paypal a fee and they are passing it on.
