Is this Two Cent Piece good to go?

I have never bought an ungraded coin sight unseen, so I wanted to get a few other opinions before I do. I sent the seller an offer and he countered. I want to send him one more counter offer and I think it's close enough that he will take it.

Is this coin a good purchase and do yall think that it would grade if it was submitted? What would you grade it and how much would you pay for it?

If you don't mind a corroded coin, and the price is right - go for it!

 

Could you please point out where the corrosion is located? My inexperienced eyes didn't see any, but that's why I asked about the coin here!

After looking a little more, I think what I thought looked like woodgrain toning, is the corrosion. Is that correct?

 

I thought you might ask BUT I WANTED YOU TO FIND IT FOR YOURSELF. So, in the interest of educating ME:

Let's pretend we are in a coin seminar. Look at both sides of you coin and tell me five obvious things you see on it (not its circulated grade) besides the fact that it is round.

5 obvious things I see, I'll give it a go!

1. Die Cracks
2. Ding at about 10:00 on the obverse rim
3.Toning (corrosion?)
4. Ding on the letters "S" and "O" on reverse
5. Obverse rim seems to be off center

 

Good enough and the fact that you caught the tiny "dings" is a good indication that you really know how to examine a coin.

OBVERSE: What I hopped you would also see is that your coin is laminated. Looking on the obverse the lighter color is in streaks - generally a good sign of originally rather than cleaning. Look next to the "4." you should see some of the surface peeling up.

Next, there are black spots all over the obverse. They look like pitting. The "We" is deformed. Again, possible pitting.

REVERSE: Streaks in line with those on obverse. Looks die wear next to rim over "ICA." The most obvious indication of corrosion is at the bottom under the bow. Rough, uneven, surface with those tiny black "pits (?)."

 

I now see everything you just pointed out. Now the biggest thing that worries me is the corrosion under the bow. I sure dont want the coin to just fall apart on me.

The laminated coloring is what really made me like the coin. I thought it looked good. I was going to counter the seller at $50 for it. This is going to seem like a dumb question, but do the above issues make it a bad purchase, in your opinion?

I do not see any obvious corrosion. I think it's possible planchet issues or die rust. This coin was struck from badly cracked worn dies. I'd call it au 55

 

I ended up getting it for $57.50. When I get it, I'll take and post some pictures. I will probably send it off to NGC through a local dealer in August.

 

Its taken a little while, but I finally got around to taking pictures of the 2 cent piece. Hopefully they look better than the original pictures.

 

Looks like a woody.

Put some Coin Care or Verdi Care on it to remove the gunk. Beautiful coin!

 

I would like the gunk gone, it just makes me nervous to use or do anything to clean the a coin. Looks like the verdi care is supposed to be applied with a soft microfiber cloth, wouldn't that cause scratches?

 

DON'T apply anything to a coin with a rag, cloth, microfiber, whatever. You'll need to touch the coin as little as possible and gently, letting the chemicals do the work.

NOTE: If the maker of a product has directions for its use - follow them. That being said: If what you say is true (my bottle of VC and the directions for use are at work), I don't recommend you use it on your coin UNLESS you don't follow the instructions.

I use tongs to hold coins. I swish them around in an ultrasonic cleaner so nothing touches the coin. From what I've seen, NCS could fix your coin in less than one minute!

There is a big myth about cleaning coins. I started cleaning mom's rings at about five or six. I moved up to detailing cars as a teen.

Your coin is a very simple job and you should be able to do it without fear. PM me with your phone #. Posting is a chore and takes too long to explain the process.
