1971 penny date

Hi all I have a 1971 penny where on the date the 7 & 1 are big just wondering what would cause that or is it die deterioration ? Thanks everyone trying to learn all I can.

It's all circulation damage

 

Thanks so much I would rather ask questions than actually have something and throw it away.

 

I should have remembered that when I accidently threw things away.

The date took a hit. So did the rim near the date. The rim took another hit above GOD in the motto, moth to mention that large scrape on the reverse. All signs of circulation damage.
