I found a 1909-D Barber in EF 40 at my LCS for $150.

Does anybody here know if these are still hard to find, or if I have a little more money, should I hold out for a higher grade?

I don't chase the Barber series with too awful much enthusiasm, but that is a harder to find date. Particularly in better grades. That may be a keeper.

    Yeah... I'm pretty tempted.

I really have no idea how frequently these are come across, and I find online options deceptive at times.

After looking at several on the bay, I’d offer $120
If that doesn’t do it, next week I’d offer $110
Not a line of customers at a LCS looking for this very piece
I’d bet he’s into it for around $75 and there it sits

I will comment, against my better judgement. Based on the image posted, this piece does not meet the criteria for 40. It will not matter if the obverse is 40. I would be more inclined to look for a 9 S or 10 S.
The subject piece is not difficult to find, comparably.

Using a 5X on the screen, this piece is a 12, and a wholesale of give or take $50-60. If it appeals to you, offer $80 (fair retail for a 12), but that would have to have a lot of appeal, for me.

@charley is pretty close on the grade. Don’t know who gave the 40 grade but that’s optimistic
I don’t have many Barber dimes. Found one CRH 5 years ago. It’s a place holder in my Mercury book

Morgandude11 As long as it's Silver, I'm listening

It has no obverse, so I would pay nothing for it. :)

That is a tougher date and the higher the grade the harder it is to find. Not sure what type of collection you are building and only you can figure it out. I am near completion of my Barber Dimes in low grade condition. A common date, you can get a high grade on the lower cost side. One date in particular is costly, even in low grade. I have had 2 dealers tell me I’m better off buying the highest grade I can afford. A good over a almost good is better. In my area and with a few dealers I’ve dealt with over the years all same the same thing and that is they can’t keep them in stock. My LCS says the same, he gets them in stock and it’s gone in a day or two.
I was at my LCS today and he had been decimated on silver. A customer walked in and bought 2 100 ounce and 10 10 ounce bars. He paid cash, over $7,000.

    @charley and @Heavymetal :
Sorry, the image in the OP is just a stock image I found of the reverse of a 1909D.

That's not the 1909D Barber dime I found at my LCS. The coin I'm referring to I had seen at the shop, but they don't post an image of it...

What the heck is wrong with you, wasting the brain cells it took me to formulate a professorial comment?

That's over retail for a 1909-D dime. If I was you I would either try to talk him down or look elsewhere.

I do appreciate all comments professorial and otherwise. Mea culpa for sure..
Still, finding this date in MS would be nicer than XF, but that gets toward the $1K range...

There’s a dealer in California that is trying to find a specific Barber Dime for me. He knows what I want and knows another dealer that has it. My dealer put me on hold and called the other dealer. He got back to me in a few short minutes and told me the other dealer wants too much for the coin, about 40% above its current pricing. He said he can find another one at a more reasonable price and advised me to wait. I have the patience so I’m waiting. Don’t be rushed into buying.
