Is there a way to prevent discoloration or toning? I see some silver eagles for sale that have some toning. I know some folks like it, its just not for me.

    Any preventative easy suggestions?

Prevent exposure to air and particularly moisture (generally humidity).
I have limited experience but I believe a product called Air-Tite is the best.

Many years ago collectors would apply lacquer/varnish.
    That's not recommended now.

I assume your wish isn't to get into a long, drawn out discussion about the technicals of preventing toning, so..... there is, or was, another line of products called "Intercept Sheild" that were supposed to inhibit toning iirc, although I never had reason to personally use them so take as you will. If they're still available or not I do not know. Perhaps someone else more familiar can better explain.

Depends on who you ask about the shellac. :vamp:

Otherwise, listen to kanga. Protect it from oxygen foremost, humidity second-foremost, and Air-Tite makes excellent products for accomplishing this end. Intercept Shield is another brand you'll want to investigate in your research.

I'm not a big fan of toning but some really look neat. I think it was Paddy who got me hooked on toned dimes.
I use airtites so far no toning. Don't use the cheap market tites, Airtites is the best brand of that I've used.
Of course that's a preventative doesn't help when already toned. That I don't know

I keep most of my coins in standard 2x2s. Haven't noticed any toning with these in several years. I've been upgrading holders lately to airtight types (guardhouse, etc), capital holders, and hard 2x2s. Danscos are pretty good as well. This is all said considering you're not in a high humidity area, other extreme weather conditions

Keep most of my stuff in Intercept Shield. Its the only albums I'd buy. The stuff is certainly available. But doesn't last forever. They recommend replacing every 10 years. I use the boxes with the slab covers too. Real nice for storage.

Thank you - I'm going to try air-tite for now. You've reaffirmed what I'm read. Will also grab an Intercept Shield album.

Well, not all toning is pretty... I've seen some slabbed MS-67 coins ruined by it when exposed to humidity and heat.

    If possible, keep them in:

    1. A sealable plastic tube or inert 2x2
    2. A safe
    3. A cool, dry place

Also, have some silica gel bags on hand to keep the evil moisture away.

Yup, that's the downside to the gamble

In addition to airtites, those should be stored in ziplock bags with a loose, sacrificial red copper cent. The cent will absorb any hydrogen sulfide that makes it's way into the bag. I would also add, this is the best way to KEEP toning where it's at if you want to stabilize a toned coin.
