    A lot of the silver I have dug up, came out of the ground looking pretty good with very little toning. Once out of the ground they seem to start toning really fast.
    They look much like the OP coin. It's like the soil was protecting the coin from toning.

    It was. The common denominator for toning is oxygen, which ain't common in the ground. :)
