Simple, It's 90% what registry guys are willing to pay for the best (lowest grade) & 10% the history of how many slot machines, card tables and general transactions they saw

I picked this up today. This recently came into a LCS near me. It was on my list of coins to get for, if at least for a type coin example. I never thought I would actually find one. I do not agree with the "grade" I argued it was a details coin because of the tiny rim ding or mark. It looks like someone once checked to see if it was real. Also there is some odd chatter going on in the facial area. I've seen examples of this coin sell in excess over 600 in VG condition. This being a details coin what do you think the accurate value is? I traded for it. It was one of those moment where I didn't think I'd come across another affordable example, at least for me. The LCS owner had it marked as VF. Another coin collector, an older gentleman about 85, took a look at it and said he thought it was a low vf 20. No one seemed to agree with me that it was details, scratched, rim ding, or am I being too picky? DSCN5228.JPG DSCN5233.JPG DSCN5234.JPG DSCN5235.JPG

You are not too picky, I agree with your assessment

The owner seemed to think the TPGs would disregard the rim gash as it was standard practice of the time to check the coin to see if it is real. Even so, the eye/facial area has chatter and some scratching. I think it has normal wear and has been lightly cleaned. Despite all this, this is still a very nice example. Thank you for you input. I feel I'm getting better at grading.

I see two minor rim dings...one at 9 obv and one at 11;30 rev...also agree, I think it has been cleaned.

I don't think the ding or the scrape on the reverse would nessicariy detail it. But I do think the cleaning it had would. Not sure on value for a detail graded coin but I'd guess 500 or so. I'd call it about f-15 grade wise

Doesn't seem like a bad catch for a $3 gold, dings, cleaning or not. Most of those coins I've seen graded less than AU have looked like train wrecks. Wish I could find one like that.

I've found some nice xf $3 gold too the key is finding them with honest wear not abuse

I think it has honest wear. It's just been polished a bit. The reverse looks better than the obverse in that respect. The AG one I saw on eBay was not nearly as nice. I forget what the final bid was but it was pretty high, I think it was over $700, maybe even 800.

Yup, I was thinking it's been polished too. If anything that is what would details it. Still nice though

The next coin I have my eye on is a Unc 1900 10.00 Half eagle with killer rim toning. I'm still looking for a better priced one, but so far haven't found anything to match it. The LCS that has it, has it on hold for me.....not for long though.

Picked this up cheap a few months back. Couldn't resist the price.

This is my first roman hemidrachm.

Coin was taken with a 5x magnifier. Looks worse, but to the naked eye its very lovely. Was surprised.

Its a tiny coin. Almost like a Panama Pill.
