All the talk on CT recently on Trade Dollars brought home my ignorance on this issue. Plus, I won a $20 gift certificate for any numismatic publication at my local coin club. So, with money and interest now, I'm looking for the best/latest reference on Trade Dollars. Preferably something that includes die variety/marriage information, history, anti-counterfeiting data. Does anyone have a recommendation? Don't care about the cost so don't let that inhibit your input. Every post should have a photo, so here's my one and only Trade Dollar from my US Type Set.
The definitive work is yet to be written; Joe Kirchgesser (who is on the CU forms as keoj) is close to finishing his magnum opus, I hear, so I would wait for that. For now, my volume one of Bowers' book on silver dollars is about as comprehensive as I can find. There is a lot of good info in back issues of the Gobrecht Journal I hear but who has the time? Lovely 77-s!
I just discovered that PCGS has made available on their website the first volume of Bowers' work on silver dollars and trade dollars. Volume 1 includes the trade dollars and it seems to include most of the information that interests me. I'll also keep a lookout for Mr. Kirchgesser's work. Thanks.
TIME IS MONEY! Unfortunately, The Bower's Book is out of date. Much more work on the series was done in the Gobrecht Journal. I recommend the Bowers book be used along with the journal updates.
There's quite a few series that are out of date or never written references or text. Im always on the look out for free references as show coin clubs do at shows put out books ,journal's, etc...free to take... If available I highly recommend to not be shy and take advantage of the free books. Last year I picked up a book on grading Canadian coins....free...and was just as excited for the book as much as the coins purchases. Another sorce to find such is flea markets, yard sales...as many times after a collector passes the family are clueless as to the value of these books. The OP IMHO has the background and knowledge to become an author on a book as such. As he has proven many times he's got game!
Paddy, you give me far too much credit. I have found nothing makes one more humble than being allowed to be around genuine experts in any field. When I was working I was one of those in my field. But in coin collecting and numismatics - I'm just a babe in the woods. I've been fortunate to be a member of several clubs (EAC, C4, JRCC, LSCC) and casually conversed with some of these members. Their knowledge is incredible. But thank you none the less for the kind words.

Your posts as well questions make us think.... and there's nothing wrong with thinking....as it gives us the power to search the answers we seek.
