Before cleaning this bronze coin of Emperor Elagabalus, I decided to post it due to the original and even strange reverse. I own and already saw scores and scores of Elagabalus coins but had never seen a similar reverse. Hope it's rare. Please post your comments.
Have a look at this one https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=2352908 Elagabalus, 218-222 Bronze Tyre (Phoenicia) 218-222, Æ 31mm., 18.47g. Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust r. Rev. Astarte standing facing, holding scepter and placing hand on trophy; in l., palm tree; to r., murex shell and column surmounted by Nike. SNG Cop. 364. BMC 397.
cool provincial with an awesome reverse. show your post light cleaning pic. didn't you get a camera 7C?
Charles, if you let us know your address, I am sure someone will pop round and remove the scanner for you.
Don't know how rare it is but I really love your wonderful coin! I agree with Pishpash. Trophy on left. Astarte in the center. Nike on column crowning Astarte. Murex shell at bottom of column. Only the palm tree seems unclear to me. Everything else is clear and easy to identify which is not always the case with these coins. Maybe from Antioch or Tyre. Looks very authentic to me unlike some suspicious Syrian coins I've seen lately. I'm not sure I would clean it except lightly, but it's your call. Congratulations, I'm jealous!
Thanks a lot for your sincere collaboration. I shall finish a light cleaning and then have a close shot with my digital camera.
Well, sometimes we're not so civilized. Or perhaps we are, but we can get carried away at times. This is a great crowd of varying backgrounds, and I think for the most part we have all become coin friends.
